I guess I am looking for difference between top two bolt holes. The one I have measures 7 5/16.

Looks like C-C on top holes for BB is 6.42. SB is 7.76.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

The SB 727 has a smaller dust shield because of the two large bolt holes at 7 and 5 o'clock for the support struts to the block. Easy enough. No reason to measure anything, though the 727 was made for the AMC V-8, too and I really don't care about those

you don't have to measure any thing if you just look at the starter nose placement. the smallblock nose is at approximately 4:30, while the big block placement is at 3:00. easy peasy.

Easiest way to tell is to look at the bottom four bolts on the bellhousing face, BB has four equal sized bolt holes while the SB has two small and two large.

Yes 727 was made for the AMC crowd , however the starter was on the chevy side .
