Hey guy's what kind of sealer do you use on a freeze plug instalation,,,,,,,I have always used the #1 brown sealer on mine,,,,,, but I have a '68 hp block and have had issues with the plugs for the last 3 seasons,,,,,,just had it out to freshen it up,,,,,,and went back with the brass again,,,,,,,fired it up yesterday and already have 2 leaking,,,,,,,I have ran it since I put it in the car with the rubber expansion plugs cause I had problems with it from the get go,,, and was wondering if it is a problem with the block other than my installation technique,,,guess it's rubber biscuit time again,,,,,,really po'ed about this block,,,,,but It's still usable so it will get used up.........
Thanks Dave

Get it real hot and use a sealer in the cooling system, it'll seal it up. There's several, I have used Barrs leak quite a few times with success every time. For a crack or a bad leak, K & R Block seal will work...forever. I have used both and K & R is forever and the best there is.
So will Barrs leak, last forever, on like your new freeze plugs.
I have always used reg clear silicone II right of the caulking gun tube that I got at the hardware store on core plugs on cast iron blocks and have never had a leak. It has never failed me, better than say blue silicone, imo.
several times I have installed fresh rebuilt motors for friends/customers that I didn't build or work on to find a core plug leaking on fire up. I used Barrs leak and it stops it easy.

This is what I use... put some Permetex around it and put it in and tighten it up

I get them from my local parts store.. its a common brand name but I forget.. but the parts store should know... its a very common company in the freeze plug business

I would go the sealer route first, you have new plugs in there.

Mr P that was the ones I was going to recommend.I did have rubbers in my 440 and they lasted years. Now all brass. But the solid screw type you posted we used at work a lot.Never had one leak or come out and they saw tens on thousands of miles.Rocky

I always use the deep steel plugs and JB weld never had an issue ever--I feel like the steel fits tighter for sure--it is also very important to check each hole and smooth out those digs and gouges made when removing old ones--I use the tootsie roll and then even JB the streak or gouge--then plenty of JB weld---I also have a driver made from diesel wrist pin that fits the 1 5/8ths units perfect so not to distort--I ALWAYS use the deeper ones figuring they have more sealing surface and will not distort--brass is a fad from the past--They are too soft these days cheaper alloy I bet. And..I agree that a dose of stopleak is smart no matter what you are working on--

You know those are not really freeze plugs but are there to clean the sand out after the block is cast. I use brass plugs and JB Weld. Never had one leak or blow out. Brass does not corrode/rust like steel plugs do. Re placing them could be a job but I ain't never replaced one so I don't know.
Same here, after almost wrecking my 69 Dart when a freeze plug flew out on the track I started using JB-Weld on all my freeze plugs.

I had a freeze plug blow out on me twice in 2 weeks.. same hole..on the track... I thought I was flexing the block..then I changed over to the ones I showed and never had another issue and those plugs are still in that engine.. but now that engine is in the land down under.. sold it to a guy in Australia
