I've also used a screwdriver to walk it above the cam gear and then a 90* pick to lift it up further and out.
Careful, your character's showing!

Make a hangmans' noose out of real thin wire, thin like parts tag wire & drop it down & hook it under the gear then get the gear loose & starting to come up with (2) L pics or heavier coat hangar wire with an L bend in the end(s) then with it free hold it up a hair with the parts tag wire & remove the (2) L wires & pull it up thru the tight opening the rest of the way with the parts tag wire
live every 24 hour block of time like it's your last day on earth

Turn it with a screw driver first to drive it over the cam, then take a pair of regular pliers, open them up to the wider setting (handles closer together), stick one half in the drive slot and the other on the outside. Squeeze and pull. Works like a charm.
Now I need to pin those needles, got to feel that heat Hear my motor screamin while I'm tearin up the street

I have some long reach pliers that will reach the gear. My pair came from SnapOn but you might be able to find similiar pliers from Sears or other tool vendor.
