2 things if you aren't aware.
First I generally would not energize the pump before starting just stroke the peddle once or twice depending on what the car like and fire it up then flip the pump on. You had said it had been sitting so if I did energize the pump it would only be for a second or so (you can actually hear the pump bog down in most cases) and then shut it off til running and flip it back on.
Second if you ever do get a flame out of the carb make sure the pump is off and spin the engine, if will actual such the fire down inside the engine where it will do no damage and burn out once it has spent the fuel you added - don't stroke the throttle it will squirt more fuel into the flame.
Literally.
Good luck.
