My carb is shooting flames when starting?

The last two days it will flame up.

How normal is this?

Car has been sitting for a couple weeks.

She has an electric fuel pump - I have it set at 4.5 lbs. Floats are set just under the top hole when pushing on fender after pulling screws.

Using 93 octane.

I would turn on key to activate the electric pump for about 2 seconds - would push the gas peddle just a little bit.

I had other cars with same 440 motor - 750df/dp holly set up without this happening.

Check your choke opperation/adjustment, and check your timing and ignition system.

ok - thanks Scott -

will have a friend stop by with a timing light.

The carb choke plate is open full - my cable is not attached to it.

2 things if you aren't aware.

First I generally would not energize the pump before starting just stroke the peddle once or twice depending on what the car like and fire it up then flip the pump on. You had said it had been sitting so if I did energize the pump it would only be for a second or so (you can actually hear the pump bog down in most cases) and then shut it off til running and flip it back on.

Second if you ever do get a flame out of the carb make sure the pump is off and spin the engine, if will actual such the fire down inside the engine where it will do no damage and burn out once it has spent the fuel you added - don't stroke the throttle it will squirt more fuel into the flame. Literally.

Good luck.

" Floats are set just under the top hole when pushing on fender after pulling screws."

Have they changed Holleys in the last 30 years since I ran mine?
Just asking.
