I've had this piece in my rafters for years. It's a Cuda but with round cut outs. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks!

Dual exhaust car without tip. Turn downs.

For mandatory noise reduction cars in California (440-6, Hemi, other?). Maybe other areas required that too? Also a 383 N code 70/71 Barracuda would get that too. No tip options on those cars I believe.

Maybe 340 72-74 Barracuda (non 'Cuda) got turn downs too? Not familiar with those cars.

I have that on my 74.

Original single exhaust car I believe.

Also AAR cuda's had those rear valances. Not really all that odd.

Depth of the cutouts seem to be different on repros?

Do the cutouts look more shallow installed on a car?

AARs had solid valances with no cutouts.

I'd say more than the depth is different. The entire profile of the bottom edge seems to be way off.

My original had slight cut outs and from what I have researched that was normal. Batalson sold me an NOS one that he said to be correct for the AAR and it has the same slight cut outs. I'll see if I can find a picture from back int he day.

That's what's confusing. Why have slight dual cutouts and then deep dual cutouts?

It would seem to make more sense to have just one passenger side small cutout for single exhaust. Unless it was just done for visual balance. But one side would have a tail pipe and the other side not.

70/1 N code cars can have the tips along with 340 cars but not on Calf. cars.

But what about NON 'Cuda models. I'm talking flat hooded Barracuda and Gran Coupes could get the 330 horsepower (blue painted) low performance 4 barrel with automatic. Seems like 4speeds got the orange 335hp motor.

Actually I think 383 and 340 'Cudas did have tips in California. Maybe someone could varify. I've seen a lot of original cars out here that did have tips. It's the larger Hemi, 440-6v, and 44-4v cars that needed the noise reduction package (U,V,R codes).

6bblgt did a whole spread sheet on this topic for 70 cars. It's pretty complicated deal.

71 Challenger 383 R/T did have tips in California. I own one and it had original tips and hangers. I assume 71 'Cudas were the same

I know of a California 71 N Code 383 HiPo orange motor Challenger (non R/T) with no tips. I don't know if they were and option in 71. Or they might come standard with 340 JH (non R/T) cars standard like they did in 70 Challenger 340 A66 cars??

70-71 'Cuda were the only way to get tips through the valence. The 340 motor was not offered in non 'Cuda models in 70/71. But there are reported 70 Barracuda 340's out there.

Very confusing subject.

You can see them here if you look close. It actually had regular duals on it in the 80s.

Sorry Steve I was thinking Cuda and didn't catch that you were talking about Barracudas.

That is a 1970 version of the non Chrome Exhaust tip rear valance. The lower edge gives it away in pictures. Holding it in your hand gives it away. It is heavier then the 71-74 version.

If you turn if over and look at the rear side. You will not see the two vertical braces, as are found in 71-74 and the reproduction version.

The BS23 models got the N41 and the N42 Chrome Exhaust Tips, even in CA.
The exception were the hemi and 440-6 cars. The noise package only applied to the R and V codes sold and registered new in CA.

70 vs 71 Non-N42 Chrome Exhaust Tips rear valances.

The depth looks deeper in the 1970 valance. However, it is the same height. Reference the recess area for the lower mounting screw hole. The top of the round exhaust cutout are the same height.
Take a look at the bottom of the 71 valance. The bottom has been modified (by the factory) for the 71-74 models.
Apparently, in 1970, there was something about the rear leaf springs hitting/bending the bottom of the 1970 valance. So the factory modified it. Kind of like the hemi fenders...make it work.

Ok. So U code single 4 bbl cars did not have to have noise reduction (no tips)?

Read in another thread U code was also no tips.

Thank you. I never knew there were two different valences.

I see AAR's with shallow ones, but are those just replacements?

No Sir. They were not required to. Did it happen? Possibly.
