So far all leads on the correct dip stick color point to black paint being correct. I was starting to think they were bare steel but based on a few good survivors and an NOS version I found, they were painted (likely dipped) in black paint which was very thin and flaked off easily so most went south in a hurry leaving a bare steel handle.

The heater hose bracket bolt (as well as many other attaching bolts holding a non painted part to the engine) were black/gray phosphate.

Reproduction heater hoses have the correct shape and features but the ink stampings need some work. The ink easily wipes off if you lay hands on it, and it's too bright white and chalky looking. Original stampings were a deeper shade of white and were far more durable when handled or cleaned, the lettering sheen was more like that of the rubber hose and was not chalky looking.

Correct restored original DR1114429 Idle Stop Solenoid. The stamping is very difficult to view once installed as the stamping faces the intake.

That often missing black spring clip is to hold the idle stop solenoid power wire.

Original sate code correct restored 4 Speed Oil sending unit, automatic cars use a smaller more compact style.

Original temp sender was installed after paint. All are stamped 250 on one side, the opposite side has the two digit date code. These were date coded with a letter for the month and a number for the year, example J0 = September 1970

NOS PS hose, plating was not high quality, this came out of an original sealed box. Date code is the day of the year and the year. 021 = 21st day, 0 = 1970

Most 1971 340's had the 294 stamped pan. These pans came two ways, with pan rail stiffeners in the corners, and without. My survivor engine didn't have them.

Paint coverage was poor on the bottoms of the oil pans, there are typically bare spots near the center of the bottom of the pans simply because the factory painters didn't usually make any effort to paint the underside. My survivor happens to have good coverage on the bottom so I copied it on my clone stroker engine and covered most of it.

I visited Scott the other day and the motor looks good in the pictures, but up close and personal, the resto job is awesome!! This should answer anyones questions on painting the 340.

71 TQ throttle cable nuts were typically silver and the stud was black phosphate, the opposite of many other Mopars of the day.
