Hey Guys,

What's the best sound deadener/heat insulation to use these days under carpet? I had a roll of stuff I used on my Charger, but during my move a year ago it's been "misplaced".

Thanks!

I ordered Rattle Trap/ Fat Mat from Amazon. The product is .081 thick I believe and foil backed. It was about half the cost of Dynamat. I looked at HushMat but the Rattle Trap stuff appears the same for a fraction of the price. I placed it throughout the floor and up the firewall. Also placed sections inside the doors and quarters. It helped quite a bit but I didn't do the roof since My headliner is still nice.

Really effective sound isolation requires the weight of the tar/rubber/foil products like Dynomat. I didn't want the weight and used Dynolight under my carpet. Its a self adhesive high density foam and light weight. It probably helped cut noise a little but mostly provided insulation from exhaust and driveline heat. Here's a link with lots of options.

My buddy bought FatMat for this roadrunner without telling me...He bought it I am installing it. I honestly don't care for it. Its too thin IMO. It lays down entirely too easy. I remember putting Dynamat in my Charger and it was a PITA to install but that is partly because it was so much thicker. My father worked at Boeing/Hughes during those years so we also scored remnants of aircraft / satellite grade insulation and I placed that light weight material over the Dynamat, especially in the headliner and firewall.

I can talk to the person next to me without yelling...fine I have HP manifolds...so that accounts for it.

While researching this, I found some liquid sound dampening solutions. Seems like it might be easier to apply or at least for hard to reach areas.

Has anyone used these? Feedback?

I think the liquid is the way to go, but I haven't met anyone who can report long term results.

I have held off using any stick on products on my cars because I am afraid of moisture in between panels - I would love to block heat and take away some drone but not at the expense of rust in the future.

Noise, vibration, harshness (NVH) is a science unto itself. There is only so much you can do with older unibody cars that were not originally designed with NVH in mind, but you can make significant reductions usually with some added weight using dampers and isolators. I also think stricter tolerance balancing on all rotating assemblies (engines, flywheels, and driveshafts) can also provide benefits. As was mentioned if moisture gets in between the metal and the material you know what happens. I like Second Skin Audio products, they are based in Tucson, AZ--go Wildcats; and their products are made in the USA.

There is a product kinda like dynomat but a fraction of the cost. It is flashing material, self stick rubber foil type of stuff. You can get a roll 12 inches wide at the box stores, but the best thing is to go to a mobile home supply store, and they can get it in a 3 or 4 ft. wide x 60 or 70 ft. for under a $100, well it might be more now cause of the way things are going.

..i too have been warned about moisture being trapped by these products that don't breath.

I read an article where Mark Stielow said that 10% of un covered panel can let in larger number% of sound and vibration.. My thoughts are the lizard skin to get full coverage "hard to reach" areas and then a mat type for the more accessible larger areas. Which products work best? DUNNO. Which is Best value? DUNNO. How much weight do you want to add?
In my 84 pick up I installed 1 inch pile house carpet on the floor as well as the behind the seat. Made a huge difference in sound reduction and heat transfer.
