Time to upgrade my carb...given the specs on my car...in sig...what would be a good performance carb over the 80508 Holley I have on it. Never changed anything on present carb...it runs well but figured I could get something more tunable for better idle and performance.

Thanks!

Probably runs pretty well but I may consider a 950hp vacuum secondary with the 3,55's.I am sure I am in the minority. Most will recommend a double pumper and that will work fine also.
Try to borrow an 850 and see if the car like it.

Can you fit a 1" open spacer under the current carb? Or 1/2" spacer?
It will clean up the fuel curve of that 850, and you could just KIT the carb.

I just love Thermoquads, I have convinced some of my friends to try them and thay also loves them

But they need some tweeking before they run like I want them to run.

I started out with a 750 DP on a very similar combo. I replaced it with a 950 HP DP from Bigs, adjusted the idle and it performed flawlessly.

The 80508 is a 750 vac secondary w/ electric choke, right?
- Do you still want / need a carb w/ choke capability?
- Where does it idle now and what issue do you have with it?
- Have you tried different vac secondary springs out to see how they change how the carb performs?
- Have you switched to add-on secondary metering block to allow jetting changes?
- Are you just looking for it to be more "peppy" on the street, rather than trying to reduce your ETs at the track?

Depending upon your answers, you might want to contact AED in Richmond about converting it to 4-corner idle and re-tuning it based on their own carb work. If you're not looking to chop your ETs down, a better tune w/ that 80508 might be all you need.

BTW, glad you put the heads you bought from me to good use.

I averaged 10.50's with a 3310, on my 388" small block. A 80496 averaged 10.40's, and the verdict is out on the 8082.

Go to Holley.com, and use their carb-calculator. Their advise is going to be better than most of ours.

That is used for sizing a carb to a production engine...
if we used that no one would be running quicker
than stock... every time I increase the carb size I
go quicker and faster... right now I run a 1050 dom
on a 405ci.. if I were to follow that calculator I
would need maybe a 750

Hey Brad...yes I remember getting those heads from you... like 6-7 years ago...surprised you remembered. In Florida now.

- Do you still want / need a carb w/ choke capability? Not essential
- Where does it idle now and what issue do you have with it? It will idle OK but I figured with a more tunable carb I could get a smoother idle...have VA it ported, may try full vacuum port
- Have you tried different vac secondary springs out to see how they change how the carb performs? Years ago I think
- Have you switched to add-on secondary metering block to allow jetting changes? No
- Are you just looking for it to be more "peppy" on the street, rather than trying to reduce your ETs at the track? strictly street

Car runs great...may just try the metering block you speak of and maybe a proform main body perhaps?

I really would like to get a six pack but after looking at the prices... Thought I paid too much when I paid 1500.00 for a set of Pontiac trips.

Not sure.... My computer went dead while I was editing it, now its gone. ??

My post was replying to Mikes (Mr P-Body) post. I put your general specs through the Holley website carb selector, and came up with an 870 cfm vacuum secondary carb, or an 850 mechanical carb, both of which seem spot on to me for your car. Mike knows his stuff, and I will generally read with eyes wide open everything he writes. In this case, I think we need to keep in mind that you're not asking for Race Car advice. As I understand it, this is a strong running street car that may see the strip now & then (??). With a tight converter and 3.55 gears, I may tend to stick with a vacuum secondary carb, and the 870 is probably a great choice.

Regarding my car, Its a .040 over 400 / 451 combo, and I run an 830-cfm Race series double pumper. But I also run a 9-1/2 converter and 3.91 gears. It may be a little faster with a bigger carb, but it has real crisp throttle response, and runs great on the street with the 830.

Yep... Great thought. For it being a street car and not an all out race application, it's unlikely that any carb swap would effect performance significantly enough to feel it in the seat of the pants.
So why throw money at something that isn't broke and most likely won't make a noticeable difference. Kit up the carb you have.
