Jim, I believe it was actually a parkerize finish, but manganese phosphate is close.
fwiw my NOS set is actually a grey phosphate
I've never seen zinc on original 4spd rods (69-71)
Edited, i went back and re-read your question. I had thought you were asking about the rods. not the shifter mech itself. I answered about the , rods. Shifter mechs are zinc plated as shown in examples below.

Floyd - the silver zinc look is what happens after all the original plating wears / rubs off...
Bryon - I bought this a few years ago and have no idea how it was stored, but it appears to have spent its life in the box. Its hard to imagine the darker finish wearing off so evenly?

Not NOS but relatively low mileage original just cleaned up, assembly is tight.
Careful, your character's showing!

Jim - I'm no expert, but both my 71's came with the slip-in style shifter (one early build and one built in May 71). I'm not sure when they switched over to the bolt in.
I always thought they switched them over in '71 to the bolt in style because of the '70 slip in style "loosening" up.Once again, you never know.

Not that it has any bearing but weren't aftermarket Hurst Comp Plus shifters black phosphate or appeared that way?
