Original Finish on Assy Line ' 70-1 4 Speed Shift Mech - 01/04/14 04:08 AM

What is the correct factory/assy line finish/plating on 1970-1 4 speed shifter mechanisms?I've seen NOS ones both silver-clear zinc and also phosphate. Thanks for any help.

Re: Original Finish on Assy Line ' 70-1 4 Speed Shift Mech - 01/04/14 07:16 PM

Jim,
I believe it was actually a parkerize finish, but manganese phosphate is close.

fwiw my NOS set is actually a grey phosphate

I've never seen zinc on original 4spd rods (69-71)

Edited, i went back and re-read your question. I had thought you were asking about the rods. not the shifter mech itself. I answered about the , rods.
Shifter mechs are zinc plated as shown in examples below.

Great question. I have an NOS one that looks like silver-clear zinc. I'll post some pics in a bit. A member posted a pic of his NOS one a while ago and it looked dark. Is that what parkerized looks like? I'll see if I can find that post....

I believe Moparts member ID "xs29j8" is the one who had the darker NOS shifter but I can't find the post. Maybe he will chime in.

Both my NOS and the one restored by Jules is dark (phosphate color) finish - but I think your correct that Parkerized is the correct term for it.

What's the correct part number for a 70-71 E-body shifter mechanism BTW?

There would be 2 different numbers as the '70 had the slip in style and '71 was bolt in handle

Jim - I'm no expert, but both my 71's came with the slip-in style shifter (one early build and one built in May 71). I'm not sure when they switched over to the bolt in.

Floyd - the silver zinc look is what happens after all the original plating wears / rubs off...

Bryon - I bought this a few years ago and have no idea how it was stored, but it appears to have spent its life in the box. Its hard to imagine the darker finish wearing off so evenly?

someone may have attempted to clean it and sprayed carb or brake cleaner on it - that would give you the look yours has...

Not NOS but relatively low mileage original just cleaned up, assembly is tight.

...again "NOS" verses "assembly line" raises its' ugly head.
I have seen them both ways in NOS as Jim explains.
Years ago I had a case of 12 NOS and they were perfect phosphate.
Some singles I have seen in NOS are like Floyds

Another example. Original box rebuilt by Hurst. Rods and levers done by Pete's Restoration here in California.

I always thought they switched them over in '71 to the bolt in style because of the '70 slip in style "loosening" up.Once again, you never know.

They built quite a few 71's with the 70 style slip in shifter. I have 2 used 70 style shifters here and they were clearly silver like the example on Jason's trans above. That said I would rule out black as a production possibility

Not that it has any bearing but weren't aftermarket Hurst Comp Plus shifters black phosphate or appeared that way?

FWIW of the '71s I've owned, the bayonet or push-in style shifter was used into Dec '70 of production

Still have one of those shifter mech that I bought of Mccannix maybe 20 years ago or more. Not sure if it is from the same box of shifters you are talking about. I will see if I can dig out all my shifters used and new and take some pictures of them since I do not run a factory shifter in the Challenger they are all sitting on the shelf in the basement the last time I looked a few years ago.

Any more thoughts on this? I`m doing my 71 cuda push in shifter now and the arms were def black phosphate but the shifter body I`m not so sure .Looks like it was either black phos or possible the same finish as rear drum backing plates.....

But NOS product meant to be on a dealer shelve can have different spec for protective coating versus assembly line. Think Master Cylinder and lids. How many cars running around with plated disc brake MC lids because NOS came that way, when assembly line were painted black.
