There is one problem with the heads though. I went to order a set about a month ago and the only way they will sell them is complete with springs for a small cam. I want to run a hydraulic roller so the springs, stc would be useless! Why won't they sell them bare.... or has this changed
I would think it's because MCH has adjusted the Valvetrain and checked all the clearances in the whole assembly and it's just part of the deal. I would think they could have bare CNC'd ones in the future. What exactly is a smallish cam. I think even the EDDY RPM's can handle up to 600 lift on stock springs, even though they likely won't handle it as I've heard before.

If i were out to build a 700 hp budget motor, this is where i would start. The heads flow enough to make the power, and the price is right. Put them on a 535 inch rb 4.5 stroke shortblock, shift at 5800 rpm!

this really doesn't make any sence, the ET really hasnät got much to do with the engines accelration rate. How aboout the number of gears, engine rpm range, total gear ratio etc?

its a generalization,, more power the engine makes the quicker it will acclerate the car theefore acclerating the engine/valvetrain quicker,,, common sense.. you could have some 572 with a small hyd cam that has a 2.73 gear that can go 11's , or something to that nature,, that makes my reasoning fail,, but again its a generalization. like a 590 cam in a 4000lb car with a 440 that is pump gas and runs 12.50's,, then take a 590 cam in a 528 or 540 that has high compression in a 2500lb drag car,, the spring requirements are not the same,, again common sense.. i have "general" rules for setting heads up based on cam, rocker ratios, rear end ratio, total lift, how many gears, how quick the car is overall,, most people put in the rear end ratio to max engine speed at the expected targeted 1320ft mark.

No mention of getting 'em w/o springs & etc. on their web page; they don't list any heads (ported or not) bare or bare w/ valves.
Kinda' sux, 'cause I have a solid roller, and have already purchased springs/retainers.

This is my point exactly. If you have parts already why would youbuy them again. Does anyone else make you buy their heads complete!!!!!

If memory serves, brandon's reasoning for this was so many people wanted to buy the heads bare but with valves. He decided that he would just sell the whole thing because you'd still be ahead of the game even if you had to replace the springs/retainers. Probably just easier for him to sell them whole.

maybe he could sell them without the springs and so on,,, maybe he would drop the price 30 dollars or something,, see them for 869.00,,, or even maybe 859.00..
edelbrock does not sell their performer head as a head w valves only,, if you bought the casting and then bought valves you would have the same amount of money as if you bought the assembled head from them.
what i would be asking for is a "race" version with a double spring and 10 degree locks and retainers,,, maybe he could offer that kind of an upgrade for 50-75 bucks more.

I bet that 440source doesn't sell them sans springs because it requires a separate SKU/stocking number. The difference of $30 doesn't make economic sense due to potential lost sales from the complete units. Easier to stock one unit for the marginal difference. Heck, if I bought them and didn't want the springs/retainers, I'd give them to someone doing a milder build. If $30 is a budget buster?
