I have 2003 Hemi Ram. I had a metal on metal sound and no 4 wheel drive, The Half shaft and the Diff spline on my driver side was grinding ( both worn) I'm replacing the driverside front Half shaft .... no problem. The spline which is about 8 inches is connected to the front Diff. I believe it's just supposed to pop out with some force. no need to remove the cover. I welded a chain to the old shaft and have tried leveraging it out. Question ... Is the slide hammer the only way to get that past the C clip ? Do I really have to manhandle that thing out? Thanks in advance.

Not messed with one of those yet, but recall that the first gen dakotas had C clips that needed removal to get stubs out of diff.

Yes. They can be a pain to get out. I have never used anything but the collar tool and slide hammer, but it you can get leverage against something ( not sure id be prying against the case) and get a straight pull, it should come out. Even the slide hammer tool isn't magic. It takes some work to get it out.

Chrysler has a special tool for removing them.
Its a sleeve that locks around the end of the shaft and a slide hammer screws on the end. IIRC.
Its a fairly common problem especially with truck that get used a lot off road. The small o-ring brakes and lets junk get in the end of the half shaft.

Thanks Craig just needed confirmation. I'll be trying again today. I was using a chain but I think I'm getting to much stretch on it. I'm going to weld a bolt on the spline and use a heavy slide hammer.

On that note Todd I think the C clip failed on my truck .. it looks like it popped out and eventually wore out the outer inch of the half shaft and spline. I read one guy welded a bead and joined the 2 (not what I'm planning on doing) but it sounded like a good idea.

Don't see why that wouldn't work.
I've had the stub shaft come out with the CV when changing the seal.

I've had good luck "popping" the axle out. Found a constant pull doesn't work well. You need to give it a quick jerk.

Got it out. 2 good hits and it popped out. All I needed was a slide puller, I was too cheap so I made one. Here's the pic of my home made tool. I used some 1/2 inch steel stock along with some 3 LB weights and welded them together. Changed the seal and my brake pads while I was at it.

I had some tubing that I welded to the spline and put a nut on the end.
