I have the opportunity to buy an original '92 150 with a 318. Approximately 80,000 miles.
What transmission is it going to have and is the speedo in the cluster electronic or is it still mechanical?
Any other thoughts about this model truck would be appreciated because I am going to hopefully look at it tomorrow.
I have never owned one of that year.

5.2 Magnum Most likely a 518 hydraulic transmission which means electronic speedo.
Excellent truck to buy with 80K on the clock

They are the perfect donor to use when doing a Magnum swap in a older 72-91 truck that's what I use them for

How is the 518 auto/overdrive regarding longevity with regular tranny fluid changes under normal use - NO towing.

Pluses :

The 318 Mag power will put a smile on your face. Overall bullet proof everything and simple to work on. Very rust resistant body.

Minus:

Those early overdives are hit and miss for reliability. Rough ride, plenty of road/windnoise, hideous looking grille, and small cab. Not deserved but a Peasant stigma attached to them.

I've owned three and have a love/hate relationship with them. Honestly, if you have to spend any time behind the wheel you are better off with a 2 Gen, which, even to this day no other manufacturer has matched.

I know it's only got 80K on it but still take a close look at the gutter lip on the roof of the cab, especially at the front, they like to rust there. It seemed that the 94 and later had the problems with the trannys more than the early ones (cheap parts used). Overall good trucks, should have alot of scoot with the 5.2 Magnum and a reasonable weight (unlike the later generations). Also watch for the intake gasket in the bottom plate leaking oil into the intake, common problem

I removed one with 155K on it & shifted it using switches & it went another 50+K before it went out

I towed regular & it was in my LWB CrewCab

My wife's Ramcharger made it to 228,000 with some towing. I didn't push it to the end, had converter shudder and flared on an upshift once if I remember right. Slipped @ heavy throttle towing. Now at 316,000 miles, going strong.

My transmission guy says that if you put a OD unit from a 97-02 518 that the 46RH trans will last a long time Improved cooling in those units

He's built transmissions & rearends in a Chrysler dealer for 27 years now
94-96 trannys were built cheaply

2WD Around my house it is a rare bird. Most that survived are diesel or just beat all too pieces. This one looks clean.

I bought a new 92 D150 2WD, 318 Magnum. I loved the engine and trans, power and fuel mileage. The seat and interior were cheaper than earlier years and I didn't love the grille but that was all forgotten when I was smoking big block pickups of other manufacture. Great truck.

It's funny those who hate on the 91-93 grills but that is what attracts me to them. As they say, "To each his own."

2wd? Good deal. Just one more thing to look out for will be a worn steering coupler.

I was going to mention if it's 4wd all the grief you can expect with that miserable solid front axle: Outer U-joints, ball joints, axle seals, just anything that has to be done on them is a pain and you need special tools. And they all fail in one way shape or form well before 100k.

The Engineer that dreamt up the straight-axle Dodges must have discovered a Mechanic sleeping with his Wife.

*edit*

Wow, if that's it you better scoop that thing up.

The Dodge Brothers invented 4WD & FWD

What 2nd gen has IFS & 4WD

I've owned quite a few 2nd gen trucks & they don't ride any better than the 93 down truck

Bought the truck. As advertised it does run good. Cruise, AC, tilt, PW & PL. Odometer does not work but everything else seems to. There is a ratchet strap securing the trans but I'll get to the bottom of that. Small amount of body rust and the left floor board needs a small repair but nothing major. I'm thinking it is going to be OK. I appreciate the input.

Good luck Darrel! You know the Magnum either runs good or it doesn't run at all & will last a long time

A testament to this is the amount of B series vans still in service from those years

Those are great trucks. I have a near identical 92 that I got for next to nothing.
You know that you can swap on 72-80 fenders, doors and box and make it look like a 70's truck. That's what I might do with mine. Most people will never notice the squared up roof skin. I would like to find a shortbox 92-93 and swap on the 70's parts and paint it up like a Macho Power Wagon. Best of both worlds

The speedometer/odometer problems are somewhat common on the elec speedos, but usually hit trouble at higher 150k or so miles, on mine anyway.
