Now that my motor build is about done, I began second guessing my decision to stick with my .557 mopar cam & maybe swap in a Lunati 60341 or 60342 cam. I decided to take a close look at the Mopar "Fading Color" magazine cam test article from a few months ago. I built a chart of the specs and results & found it pretty telling. Looking carefully at the results I spotted some inconsistencies in the way the specs were advertised in the article. Bottom line, the MP .557 & .590 cams fared well given their age, I think I will stick with my original plan. One of the first things that stands out is that comparing most of the cams of the article to the .557 cam was like comparing apples and oranges as most had way more duration and lift. Also, after giving the cam vendors free reign to spec any custom grind they wanted, only one manufacturer really outperformed the old .590 MP grind. I realize every motor combo responds differently to varying cam parameters, but this was still a pretty telling test.(See attached PDF).

Dom, motor is still on the stand, but I plan to run 3.54 gears and power brakes. I figure I'm pushing the limits even with the .557 cam. I talked to Lunati, they recommended the 60341 or the 60342 on 112 centers. With 1.6 rockers, 60342 would net similar duration and .586/.608 lift, but would the time & expense really yield a significant power increase. The article leads me to believe that the answer is no unless I'm willing to spring for a roller.

Which heads? What do they flow? I would run a 108 lsa myself installed around 104-105 for more down low grunt but that`s just me.
Stock Eddys, so 290/217 @.600 if you believe the glossy sales brochure. I thought about running the off-the-shelf 60342 advanced a bit, I'm sure it would make a little more power, but how much? 15 Hp probably not worth the hassle, but 40-50, for sure. Guess it would be handy if someone did a similar test on a 500 BB with the OOTB Lun 60341, 60342, MP.557 & .590,maybe Comp XE295HL & other, plus Hughes 4852 & 5256. I realize this kind of cam comparo is a lot of work as I'm sure Keith can attest.

Can`t say for sure what hp difference you`d see in the different cams BUT, I guarantee those heads ported by yours truly AND a stout cam would easily give you the 50+...............

I have maybe a dozen cams for big blocks and most of a 499 and planned on doing a similar test. But after the amount of money Ive lost writing articles I'm not sure if or when it will happen Keith
I'm with you there.

Yes,I have a dyno in my shop. If I had to rent dyno time I never would have been able to do it. Basically I recovered the cost of the cams for writing the article but nothing for fuel, oil, gaskets, time, wear and tear. Although I will mention that between Todd at Competition Wedge Engines and Greg from Superformance gaskets they saved me some money by donating the gaskets. Cant say enough about the quality of those gaskets and how much it was appreciated. Keith
Ya I figured that later. when I read the notes I thought it was a compolation of tests........ Nice job Did you advance the cams as per cam companies recomendation? If so did any of them say why they felt they needed to advance them and not choose another cam?

Thanks, I degreed each cam to the cam cards recommend installed centerline for the article . I figured that was the only way to be fair . A few were tested with different installed centerlines and a few other cams were also tested but not for the article . Keith
What article is this??? I must have totally missed it. Can i see it somewhere online?
