Bench rebuilt 727, it worked fine for a couple of hundred miles after I first installed it in the car, then it sat for awhile and now when I put it in drive, it just moves a couple of feet and that's it. It still has reverse though.

Please tell me it just needs a band adjustment?

yes they do but band is only used in manual low , otherwise the rear sprag is doing the holding of the rear drum.

Your issue could be the rear clutch.

grrrr......

Is that a DITY job or am I sending it to a transmission guy? I know little about automatic transmissions beyond adjusting bands, valve bodys and basic maintenance.

Now's a perfect time to become acquainted with the inner-workings of a Torqueflite...

I really enjoyed rebuilding my 1st trans this year. Picked up a couple of widely read books & had at it. Only takes a few tools & some patience. Had a couple of small rookie issues but I saved a ton of dough & now have no concern rebuilding them in the future. The time/tools will pay for itself ten fold, IMHO.

Get a factory service manual and tear into the transmission. It's really not that hard. I've done a few.

The only special tools you need are some snap ring pliers. It is a good idea to have a dial indicator to measure the end play on the shaft.

There's a lot of difference between a basic rebuild, and a full-boogie race unit...

What 'chu gonna do???

Gonna look at sprag options??? Play with line pressure???

Look at drum and band options??? 'Re-program' the shift-points???

It can be as wild, or as mild as you want it...

you need a good set of snap ring pliers and a set of lock ring pliers for the lock ring on the bearing in the tailshaft.

lock ring pliers

To compress the lip seal I use zipties and then use freez spray to cool it, works great.
Or you could zip tie it and put it in the freezer.

And having the proper size bushing drivers and a shop press makes this job a whole lot easier.

I bought a $120 press & a $50 bushing driver kit for doing these. Makes changing out the bushings a breeze. A homemade adapter & you can press the front clutch retainer on with ease as well. Doing one trans yourself easily pays for all the tools.

I use my Lisle Cam bearing install tool to isnatall and remove these bushing .

another tool needed , or improvised , is one to compress the retainer for the springs on the front clutch.
