Looking for some ideas on where to start as far as trying to get my truck to hook up better. '85 D150, 4-speed trans, currently 3.55 gears. obviously stickier tires helps, but anyone have experience trying to get these things to hook better?---hopefully inexpensively too....
I think I most likely will be mounting the 9 1/4 rear above the spring like a car setup, insteads of the stock style under the spring. Currently has 8 1/4 in stock location.

I put a cheap set of traction bars( mount also replaces the shock plate) I bought at Carlisle a few years ago, clamped each front spring segment and put in the B body Rancho shocks out of my Dart ( bolted right to the traction bar) I also lowered the rear using long shackles. Along with M/T drag radials it goes consistent mid 2.0 60 fts. running low 15s.

i have caltracs on mine...rear is on top the springs Call them, they'll be at your door within 3 days
i would invest in them if you are looking for more power in the future, they are adjustable and are proven traction aids
ive been well into the 10's on them and drive my truck every where
oh and this on a 30x9 hoosier radial slick so you dont need huge tires also on 295 mickey thompson radials on 9 inches wide
on a soft 1.60 60ft....want my stock 8 3/4 to live

Not sure if it'll work, but since I'm rebuilding the springs.... I'm going to add a half-a-leaf to the front half of my springs. Not much more, won't hurt the ride quality, and will resist wind-up. It's similar to the factory approach on the musclecars of old...and if it doesn't work, cal-tracs most likely We'll see how it turns out

Yea. I actually had a very similar idea too as I have a set of extra springs hanging around. It is going to be such a tough comprimise to do what I want to do as far as keeping the street manners and getting it to hook. Cal Tracs do indeed work great, I had the full setup on my '73 Dartsport and it worked great with instant results, But I really wasn't looking to spend that much if possible---Yea, I am being cheap.
I was thinking of doing the following, starting at the front, take a leaf with the front eylet and cut it just after where the axle mount pad is. Then take a full leaf and cut the front eyelet off. Then add leafs to get the desired thickness / ride height. All of this is with the axle mounted on top of the springs with the rear shackle flopped around to be more like a car set up.
All the caltracs are doing is controling axle windup, figure that part out without them and it will still do the same. The nice thing with them though is you can pre-load the suspension giving you better control, kinda like a poor mans 4-link.

When I built my shorty I did the same thing with my springs.. Nail the throttle the front end raises, the rear squats, no wheelhop.
I am truckless..

Heres a question about the traction bars... I see many Chevy bars with the 4 hole pad, but they have a funny looking U bolt. Why wouldn't one just use the 4 hole pad for mounting the U bolts like in a typical application? And wouldn't these be the "better" variety to use using the typical U bolts for the axle over leaf spring setup? As opposed to the universal bars that just clamp around the leaf spring.

I made a set somewhat like that in high school.. I used a stock plate with the normal U bolts.. They worked fine on my 65 Muskrat.. Scratchy needs to post a pic of his Lift/ T Bars..
I am truckless..
