x5 With all the clatter and messing around trying to adjust them, I don't see what the point of the big hydraulic cams is, might as well have a solid and make more power all other things being equal. One thing I wish I would've done different with my 440.

What is the big issue , are we all spoiled by how quiet our Prius is? easy enough to fix , put in a cam with a chevy lobe like we only used to have in the past , problem solved I don't understand why someone would go to the expense of installing an adjustable valvetrain on a hyd. cam ???

Agreed. Not to mention the quality issues with hydraulic lifters available today. So, faster ramps than ever, the need for much more spring pressure for control, and poor quality lifters that are generally more complicated. I doubt many are getting the performance out of their fast ramp cam profiles that they should. If you really care about performance, put a solid in it. Otherwise, put a lolli-pop cam in it, close the hood and forget about it.
I must really be the odd one out here. To me there is nothing sweeter than the sound of solids, and nothing say performance better.

I have a big hyd cam from straightline performance and I just replaced my lifters with a set from Comp cams. I was shocked that they just wanted the lash set from 0 to 1/8 of a turn as normally I would go to a 1/2 turn. Anyway I was surprised that they were as quiet as they were. Maybe it's because I am running M/T cast aluminum valve covers. (Very thick compared to some valve covers which may stifle the noise)
It depends on the lobes. Some of the Straightline performance stuff I have seen has very gentle ramps.

Me too. A little sewing machine sound is nice... the sound of power.

Come on.. a SMART guy like you asks this? The guys at Comp suggest an adjustable valvetrain to achieve preload. With my limited cam knowledge, I can see how that having each rocker adjusted to a specific setting compared to being along for the ride on a common shaft....Makes sense to me.

True but if you are going to buy adjustable rocker you might as well get a solid cam for max performance ... and if I remember correctly aren't you switching to a solid cam ??? You could have saved a bunch of money and just bought one in the first place.

John, you are always an asset here and I have learned to rarely question your advice. I'm not arguing with you here, just an alternative perspective. I ran the stock rockers even with a Comp .545 cam and later developed valve stem wear. After reading online tech stuff, I stumbled upon Comp's advice about running adjustable valvetrain to achieve preload. I've since read that my valve stem wear could have been due to rocker geometry, rocker tip misalignment, etc. My changes to my 440/493 are part of an ongoing improvement and learning process. I have no doubt that this engine is serving as an 8 cylinder set of "training wheels" and that my next build will greatly benefit from the lessons I have learned. MANY of the members here are to be credited for helping me with it all.

Nothing you can do that series of cams clatter--I think closing ramps are the culprit.
This. I had the 275 and same thing. My solid .557 MP loose lash cam is quieter!

Sounds like some guys spend more time adjusting valves on their big hydraulic flat tappets than I spent with my solid roller. If you're gonna run a big cam like that..might as well do a solid. I run the valves on mine in the spring(about 20 min tops) put the covers on and drive it all summer. The tight lash solids aren't even that loud...

Same here I adjusted them once on the test stand and once after about 5 passes three years ago.My valve train is pretty bulletproof though with bushed Isky iron rockers. My XE HL Comp hydraulic was more annoying than the solid Comp I have in the Savoy now.I run it very tight though 12 intake and 14 exhaust cold. Gus
