I was wondering if it is possible to grind away the welds on my tailpipe tips so they look smoother.

If I just take my portable Mikita hand grinder and try to take off the rough area would that work or would I loosen the connection of the welds and cause the tips to break off??

Thanks for any advice.

Any time a weld is ground there is the potential to weaken the connection.

That said, I personally think you could carefully grind down the weld based on the photo and make the weld look cleaner (less visible) without compromising it to the point the tips would break off.

Pretty low resolution picture to try to show the area, but along with the above, use a "flapper" disc on the grinder. It leaves a much finer surface finish than a grinding stone.

Flapper disc? Is that like one I have that has pieces of fiber on it like a wire wheel?

This may be a little better of a photo of the welds.

Hmmm ... you wouldn't want to go posting this on any welding forums or they'd jump on you so fast it'd make your head spin. Any good weld (penetration) would not suffer from the bead being ground off.

As for this case, this isn't a bridge - go ahead and knock the bead off. Use the flap disk as previously recommended.

I am giving them to a young man who is building his first hot rod and does not have much money for parts. So it's my way of helping him out and getting him on the road sooner.

I personally would not grind it. it'll just draw more attention to the pipe. You will never get it better than it is now, ginding it will just make it stand out more unless your the welder.

Your have grind marks to look at instead of a weld bead.
