We are fighting 2 of these. One of them is in a 65 fury with a 4 speed behind a big block and the other is in a 69 dodge a100 van. they have that weird front ujoint with the rubber boot and when you take it apart, it has the 2 pinion cv joint inside. What are other people doing with these? The one for the van is trashed and probably needs a different driveshaft. Does someone make a standard ujoint flange that bolts to the trans output and then just make a custom shaft to eliminate the thing? The one in the fury we have had to rebuild twice because it doesn't like the horsepower of a 440 in a heavy car with my dad's lead foot. Parts aren't easy to locate for these and I think we are shooting to get rid of them all together.

Thanks in advance

That's the old "ball and trunnion" style. Yes, you can get a regular "u-joint" style driveshaft made to replace it. The driveline shop I used to work for did it all the time when they were more prevalent. (not a lot of them left anymore.) If you can't find a driveline shop in your area, Here's a link to the one I used to work at..... Great honest people! They can ship you what you need if you give them a call.

The real issue is however IMO, the trunion style you have doubles as a slip joint, and just adding a flange and a u joint does not solve all your problems.

My bad, Andrews link addresses the issue, which I had to on my 62 dart

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Why not just rebuild the original? I never had an issue with them.

Here's a link to the parts:

My 65 B body still has the OE one.Its a 550 hp 440 4 speed.Ive broken a lot or rear joint but never a front. One option is a 66 up 4 speed and drive shaft as 65 4 speed was the last year in cars for the B&T.Rocky

For the van, the driveshaft itself is damaged, both at the cv end and the u joint end. Unless we stumble across a good used one that can be freshened I think we'd be smarter to go standard u joint.

The fury, well, we rebuilt it when the car was restored, took it on the 08 power tour and long hauled. Got in some SERIOUS traffic issues due to flooding between Rochester and Madison(6 hours to get 60 miles). When we got back up to speed the car had a bad vibration, all the stop and go and in/out with the clutch killed the CV joint. Can't get parts on the road, degreased it with brake clean and did the "stuff the broken needle bearing parts in between the whole ones that were left", greased the hell out of it and limped it 650 miles home. We had to rebuild it again after scouring parts and next time it's getting replaced without a doubt. Dad is an aggressive driver...

I was aware of the slip joint issue before I posted, the shaft for the van is so short that I think we could use a front shaft from a 4wd something that has a slip joint in it already.

Thanks for the replies and links. The main thing is knowing that a bolt on flange exists to put a u joint on the end of the early trans yoke. Dad has no issue with money so the fury will get a new custom shaft from inland truck parts. The van needs to be half assed due to budget concerns.

Ball and trunnion parts are not hard to find, maybe in locally, but getting one isn't.

www.oldmoparts.com is another source. Ran one in my 64 300 for years with a warm 413, a stick, 4.10 gears and N50 meats. Broke the rear U joint and even ripped the ear off the 8 3/4's yoke, but never broke a B&T.

My older MoPars had them as well, but a flathead 6 never stressed them.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Well, there are two different size B&T joints. I am working on a 64 Dodge (for a customer) that was a /6 automatic and installing a 440 with a pushbutton BB 64 transmission. There was no flange on the rear of the rebuilt supplied trans. I have a BB 64 trans that has the flange, but the orig driveshaft B&T won't fit the BB flange. However, I also have a 64 trans from an Imperial, and it has what looks like an 8 3/4 pinion yoke on it that I removed. I will get a driveshaft made with a slip yoke shaft like a truck, pretty much what the above linked article shows. Any case, here are a couple pics of that yoke, it looks just like the one the 741 rear end in the car. Has #2882284 on it and 20 HT W stamped on it also.

another picture. This would use the same size rear u-joint that is on the rear end in the car. It physically looks like the same part as the pinion yoke in the car. I will see if I have a 741 center and pull off the yoke.
