To all of you bracket racers out there who get lots and lots of passes out of your motors and Trannys, what are your secrets? I know lots of guys who get hundreds of passes out of theirs, but I have never been so lucky, it seems the best I can do is about 100 passes on a motor. Maybe I have just been unlucky, but maybe there are some secrets? I'm putting together yet another motor, and I really don't want to be pulling it out after 100 passes.

Wow... 100 passes... I'd be pissed too... I have about 400 on the engine and its still fine but I dont make a ton of power BUT the car is light... light is always easier on equipment... my trans has been in there about 9 seasons... still fine with a trans brake... I am gonna freshen up 2 of my engine and the trans because I'm gonna sell the car with both engines... but I only run high 8s and it could run 8.50

I had a piece of crap MP 360 crate short block with W5's on it and a big flat tappet, beat the snot out of that thing for 15 years and was still a working engine when I pulled it to put my high dollar 408 in the car. That lasted 12 passes. Stuff happens but if none of your engines lasted much more than 100 passes I'd be looking for another engine builder and/or machine shop.

Perhaps it would be better for us to focus on what problems you are finding around 100 passes.
High rpm needs better valve train... etc.

It's been a variety of parts, and not all the motors have been Mopar some were small block fords that I used to run. I think it's been bad machine work mostly, parts were not what I was told they were in one of the small blocks. I guess I pretty much answered my own questions, I have lots of faith in the guy who is building the motor he has built a few for my father and they have been great, so I think this one will turn out ok.

I turn a fair amount of RPMs all the time(8200 rpm) but I run good parts, good balance but I dont run the big HP... dont need to in a light car... the valve train in a SB is very important due to the RPMs

That would be me most years...Unless it has a hemi in it, then it seems I kill it every year for somthing stupid, but NOT this year! We have learned!
Honestly, it takes a little luck, and it usually does not happen the first year. Most end up pulling it apart, and fixing things. Over time, you sort it out, and it all comes togather. I have bracket cars with engines and tranmissions that have lasted +300 passes without any failures, but a little luck helps too.
We are on our third season on the 512 making 700hp on pump gas, and we hit 120 passes on it last year, but as I mentioned, we had a few close calls, and some luck. You learn what parts work, and what doesn't and try and be very watchful of things.

More info might help people help you make it better...
FWIW I get a few hundred out of mine in the big tire car. It is making over 1050hp and is pretty much trouble free. Good parts, attention to detail and good maintenance go a LONG way.

A checkup is always preferable to an autopsy. Maintenance is the key to learning what is or isn't working. After they grenade themselves it's kind of hard to figure out what went wrong. And remember, it seems they will ALWAYS run their fastest right before they blow up.....seen that MANY times...

I have been thru alot of motors and builders, I just got my motor back from Jim Evans race engines, We broke a rod the end of last year, block damage sent to LSM, new Diamond pistons, went to Isky lifters, went to carrillos rod ( from Grodens), new ex-valves,had to have dry sump pump re-build on and on all said and done over $ 10,000.00 re-build I updated alot of parts and hopefully will stay together but I pulled motor/trans out every season to freshen up. Oh it's a R3 W8 motor

The 360 in my car has been raced for 17 years now. The only thing that has been replaced internally is the valve springs. It has a M.P. hydraulic cam, and the engine never sees more than 6,000 R.P.M.'s. Who says bracket racing has to be expensive?
Seems like only last week we were test driving that engine around Memphis. I must be getting old.
