Hi People, Have any of you ever used a small oil filter designed for 2.2 litre engines on a small block to deal with space constraints. A friend of mine used to use them quite often in different applications including race cars and states he had no issues. What about filtration, flow etc.? Any input appreciated. Thanks MoParts!

I have been doing just the opposite going with the PH8A size filter on the engines that spec that tiny PH3614 size filter since my first 2.2 back in 85.
IMHO, you want as much filter surface area as possible. More surface area you have the less likely the filter bypass is to open an circulate non filtered oil.
Plus the bigger filter holds more oil and will dissipate more heat.
My recommendation if you can't fit at least the PH43 size filter you should go to a remote filter.
I agree and have always used the bigger is better approach with oil filters. In this case there isn't room for access. I'm hoping that with the limited use this car will see and my way over the top oil change schedule that the small filter may work. I already have the remote filter set up for the car and was all set to install when my friend advised me of the small filter possibility. Stupid as it sounds, on this car I just don't like the looks of the remote filter. My buddy says that the remote units are also susceptible to leakage.
Thanks for the help people and any more input greatly appreciated.

The by-pass valve pressure is the same for the small filter and the larger one, 7-9 PSID. This info is on Amsoil oil filters, I do not know the by-pass valve pressure ratings for Fram filters.
But with less filter media the pressure drop across the media will be higher than for a filter with more media so the potential for the filter to be bypassing is higher with the small filter even if both have the same rating.
Other than clearance a larger filter has no down side and a smaller filter potentially does.

Don't be cheap and change your oil at the 2500-3000 area if you are really worried about it and you will never have a problem.
Even changing it at 2000 mile intervals is not going to gaurentee the filter is not by-passing especially if you have an HV oil pump.
Its just plane good engineering to use the biggest filter possible.

IIRC, the GLHS cars used a larger DIA filter that was still low-profile. I remember seeing that the application also fit Renault Alpine cars, which I thought was interesting because I really liked those cars at the time. That filter might be somewhat of an improvement, but I can only vouch for the OD of the filter can... the guts might be the same for all I know.
Running a standard volume oil pump and thin oil would tend to reduce the tendency of a filter to bypass, but those are bandaid fixes at best. I run 10W-30 oil and the short version of the OEM small block filter, but I'll be upgrading to a remote filter when I plumb in my Accusump. That combo should let me run at least one LARGE filter (maybe two), plus another 2+ quarts capacity in the Accusump. That'll be somewhere between 7 and 9 quarts in a 5-quart pan.

Hey, I use PH43's (usually something else, so you'll knoiw the size, etc) on my 2.5's and up. Fits the 4 cyl's., 3.0, 3.3, 3.9V6 ,etc. I look at it as more capacity!!

As far as Fram goes;
PH8A full quart PH43 3/4 quart PH16 1/2 quart (same as Mopar 5281090) PH3614 1/4 quart
All have the same base thread and gasket just a different capacity.
No longer taking $h!t from anyone!

We need to translate those Fram numbers into ABF numbers for some of the folks here. I have been running Pure1 PH8A sized filters on my 360 van. Mechanic buddy said the big one is too close tho the stock exahust. I have 6 1/2qts.
