Oil Filter ? Small 2.2 Oil filter on small block. - 10/26/08 10:35 AM
Hi People,
Have any of you ever used a small oil filter designed for 2.2 litre engines on a small block to deal with space constraints. A friend of mine used to use them quite often in different applications including race cars and states he had no issues. What about filtration, flow etc.? Any input appreciated.
Thanks MoParts!

Been doing it for 15 years with no problems. Make good for tight clearances. It even fits my garden tractor.

I have been doing just the opposite going with the PH8A size filter on the engines that spec that tiny PH3614 size filter since my first 2.2 back in 85.
IMHO, you want as much filter surface area as possible. More surface area you have the less likely the filter bypass is to open an circulate non filtered oil.
Plus the bigger filter holds more oil and will dissipate more heat.
My recommendation if you can't fit at least the PH43 size filter you should go to a remote filter.

The by-pass valve pressure is the same for the small filter and the larger one, 7-9 PSID. This info is on Amsoil oil filters, I do not know the by-pass valve pressure ratings for Fram filters.

I all ways run the smaller filter. IMO for a car that will likely only see 200 miles or so a year and probably gets its oil changed more then needed there should be no problem.

Don't be cheap and change your oil at the 2500-3000 area if you are really worried about it and you will never have a problem.

Thanks Folks,
This car will never see 2K mi. between oil changes so I think I'll be o.k.
Thanks Again

IIRC, the GLHS cars used a larger DIA filter that was still low-profile. I remember seeing that the application also fit Renault Alpine cars, which I thought was interesting because I really liked those cars at the time. That filter might be somewhat of an improvement, but I can only vouch for the OD of the filter can... the guts might be the same for all I know.
Running a standard volume oil pump and thin oil would tend to reduce the tendency of a filter to bypass, but those are bandaid fixes at best. I run 10W-30 oil and the short version of the OEM small block filter, but I'll be upgrading to a remote filter when I plumb in my Accusump. That combo should let me run at least one LARGE filter (maybe two), plus another 2+ quarts capacity in the Accusump. That'll be somewhere between 7 and 9 quarts in a 5-quart pan.

Hey, I use PH43's
(usually something else, so you'll knoiw the size, etc) on my 2.5's and up. Fits the 4 cyl's., 3.0, 3.3, 3.9V6 ,etc.
I look at it as more capacity!!

As far as Fram goes;
PH8A full quart
PH43 3/4 quart
PH16 1/2 quart (same as Mopar 5281090)
PH3614 1/4 quart
All have the same base thread and gasket just a different capacity.

I used to use the PH8A size filter on m 2.2 turbo cars in place of the specified PH3614.
My Dakota gets the PH43 size filter in place of the PH16 that is specified.
My PT gets a PH3600 which is the same diameter as the specified PH3614 but is almost as long as the PH8A.
On the Barracuda the headers prevent anything longer than the PH43 but there is plenty of room for a larger diameter if I run across one. One of my winter projects is for a remote filter just so I am not dribbling oil onto the headers any more.

We need to translate those Fram numbers into
ABF numbers for some of the folks here.
I have been running Pure1 PH8A sized filters on my 360 van. Mechanic buddy said the big one is too close tho the stock exahust. I have 6 1/2qts.
