I'm looking at going day 2 on my 70 cuda, I want to mount a set of cragar SS with L60x15 Formula Super Stock tires, what offset would fit nicely in the wheel wells. Thanks in advance.

Don't worry about the offset , backspace is what you want .... 15 x 8 with a 4 1/2 backspace will put the wheel dead center. Just in case you want to know , that is 0 offset.

Thanks, so a 15x8 wheel with a 4 1/2 inch back space will fit nicely in the rear wheel wells with no problems? Thanks!

On the '70 Barracuda I had, 15x8 Rallyes with 4.5" BS were just a bit too much, and would rub the wheelwells on bumps using a 275/60R15 tire. I remember thinking I should have used 4.25" BS.

I have 15x8, 4.5 backspace Rallyes with M/T L 60s. They will rub.

You need more backspacing, not less. How much room till the tire rubs on springs?

A 5 inch back spacing should move the wheels closer to the rails than a 4 1/2 back spacing correct?

4.5 backspace fit a 275 60 perfect on my car with a 8" wheel but my lips are rolled so i had zero problems with rubbing.

I tell you what , remove a rear wheel from your car , lay a straight edge across the drum where the wheel mounts, Measure from the edge to the spring , in front of the drum and behind the drum.
You need 1 inch for tire buldge and at least 1/2 inch clearance.
Also the backspace on a wheel is measured to the back edge of the actual rim , not where the tire sits on the bead.
And yes , a 5 inch backspace will move it closer to the spring. Also include the extra cost per rim to do a custom backspace that most places are charging now.

========================================
Factory 15 x 7 ralleys have 4 1/4 backspace , so you say put the full extra 1 inch of a 15 x 8 wheel to the outside , I don't think so.

So is this the car in the picture you posted , with those wheels that rub on the rear , that is not a 4 1/2 backspace on those wheels.

Sorry, brain fart. 4.75" BS. Didn't post a photo. Car was a stock, 32,000-mile 318 car, rubbing was up in the wheelhouse on corner of the tire.

My bad and you are correct. Those are 10" wide Centerlines. I forgot that I backed it out and took pictures after I got the Rallyes on the front but not the back. I don't have a picture with the Rallyes on my computer but I still need to keep the shocks aired up or the tire will rub.

Thanks

First, remember that every vehicle is different. You really need to take measurements on both sides of the car to be sure what will fit.

4.5" backspace for a 15 X 8 is common with many wheel vendors. However, I tried a American Racing Torque Thrust II with 4.5" backspace and did not like how it looked. I changed to a custom 5" backspace wheel and was much more happy with the look. HOWEVER, I also made some changes to the spring location (bolt-in only) to increase the tire to spring clearance. The 5" BS might be OK with the stock spring location, but it would be tight. Again every vehicle will be different. If you search the archives, you should be able to find a post I made on this.
