I am using high temp Dupli-Color enamel to paint my engine, but I don't see any high temp primer. Is high temp primer or any primer needed prior to paint my engine?

I degreese it with simple green degreeser/cleaner,use brush to remove heavy deposits,rinse with water,airhose dry it,shoot it with 3 cans of the deplicolor hemi orange.

always looks good and last a good while if you dont have oil leaks.

I like to use the rustoleum hemi orange and use a small paint gun with it reduced 4/1 with mineral spirts.( I will post the paint# later)

when the engine is on the stand for painting I spray a can on and wait 15-20 mins then another can,wait 15-20 mins,then last can goes on. i save some of the 3rd can for touch ups as I install it and dress the engine while working my way out from under the hood.

I agree with SFT on the rustoleum with no primer method. I used it on an engine in my Dart, and 70,000 miles later, none of it peeled off. It did lose a lot of the gloss, but I didn't mind.

I used Plastikote with no primer.

Key is getting as much of the old paint off as possible and DEGREASE DEGREASE DEGREASE!

Still looks almost perfect 5 years later.

Mostly the engine does not get hot enough to bother paint. Many folks have used car paint without problem. Agree prep/cleaning is the key. I did use an etching primer as first coat (Eastwood) with MP spray bomb finish coat. The primer helps adhesion with various aluminum parts. It has held up well.

I like raw un painted aloony-um with my hemi orange.

If the engine is currently unpainted, I would first put 3 or so fine coats of epoxy primer. THis will provide the better foundations and fill up gaps in and around the intake manifold area. It will also help the finish coat keep its sheen and resistance to heat.
