There is a awesome article in how to build big inch small blocks of this 371 ci engine! It's an engine built for Cascar in canada which is there little version of nascar. They took a 340 block and bored it 4.060 and took a 360 stock stroke 3.58 that has 340 mains and took 60 over 360 pistons which made this 371 ci engine! For the rules they can only run certian stuff like only 390 cfm carburetor. It does have a set of w2 heads. Only 10:1 compression with a 555 lift flat tappet cam. There is a bunch of other info that I am leaving out but the build is very mild. It made 521 hp at 6400 rpm and 472 lbs of tq at 5100 rpm!

You give the rundown of the engine in your post..why are you asking if anyone is familiar with it? What exactly is your question?

Just wondering if anyone ever ran this combination or heard of anyone running it. I thought I would post about it because It almost sounds to good to be true but sounds very simple and easy and I am tempted to try it sometime!

Alot of people have ran .060 over 360's.. thats all it really is.

They are leaving a bunch of power on the table with the restricted carb and it really isn't anything special.
I have the same book , so I am familiar with the motor you are referring to.
I think this was built for a fairly narrow operating range and for the buck , I'd look at different a cam , intake , carb and get a lot more out of it.
That is just one example he uses of the possibilities for a stroked small block , but unless I needed a spec motor for a series I wouldn't spend a lot of time puzzling over this one.

Back in the day we used to do this a different way. 360 block, crank, rods, and late model 340 standard bore pistons. At the time was a very cheap way to make a 11.5 / 12 to 1 small block depending how much you milled off the top of the pistons. We did several like this made great power for what it was. Ran as good or better than any comparable chevy or ford small block.

Tom Hoover from Chrysler made that combo for his notchback Cuda and it was featured in the Feb. 1976 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. The undersides of the low compression 340 pistons had to be clearanced for the 360 counterweights as well. I have the issue buried somewhere here at home. It was very inspirational in my early years. But that was before the 360's had a variety of pistons to choose from.

Like the 355 Nascar/circle track engines from the '70's, it's a cool combo. But there are a lot of other, less expensive combos to make HP today.

Built many low buck .060 over 360's = 371 hard to beat for the money invested. split one cylinder on one after years of abuse at 7,000 plus rpm many times would not hesitate to build one again stock rods, crank, kb pistons, sonic check the block if you can older blocks seem the best. all depends on your budget many people set their sights so high the project never gets done and the parts end up for sale never used. they run good for the money and 360 blocks are common....

Or use the 360 crank with the mains turned down to fit the 340 blocks and bore the 340 .020 Mo Better

Yep that what I do. You need the crank turned anyway so we turn it to 340 main size. It seems to have cooler oil temps also because of the smaller main size.

We had a lot of success with the .040 over 360 with the 72' 340 pistons. I had a set of home ported J heads and the mopar .590-312 cam. Stock oil pump and a moroso pan. You could find the 360's all over the place for $200-300 back in the late 70's early 80's. We ran low 11's in a Duster, 904, and a dana w/ 5.13 gears. When we got rich and bought a used W2 top end we were able to run 10.80's. Was a blast back in the day.

I've run 10.95 with my 374 inch SB. (4.08x3.58)
Home ported J's and a .520 lift cam. That was on the 5th pass on a fresh engine and on the rev limiter @1000' Proper gearing should lead to better ET's.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.
