Quite an amazing bunch of replies. Some replies, I believe, may not be knowlege based, but a repeat of something heard, eh? I have two in cars here, both street cars, one raced maybe 30 passes, another with well over 300. Low 12 second cars, and we still like 'em. A friend we refered also has one, 13 second car. He likes his as well. One of mine is 15 years old. I haven't had trouble. Good luck in your choice.
If that low 12 second car had the GER out and a T/A J convertor in it,,it would probably turn into a low 11 second car,,mine did!!
If you like drag racing, support your local track.

I had the same problem as Ray
I just wonder if I could send it to a real shop and have it turned into something nice or if it just is not cost effective??

Total pile of steaming ****...had one years ago, supposed to be a 3500 stall more like 1800,had it behind my 340 maybe 4 months, threads pulled out of tabs on 2 holes,,,and no I didn't cross thread or strip, put a Munsinger in it,,car went quicker, faster and 60ft'd much better. I wouldn't accept one even for free.

I ran one in the mid 90's for a few years ran 7.30's in the 1/8. Bought a 10 in. Coan race converter and my car slowed down a tenth. I called PTC to see if they could do anything with the GER and they said there is nothing they can or would do to it.
1.33 60 ft,6.21 at 110.59 in the 1/8, pump gas small block,2950lbs,drag radials,mufflers and driven to track ...

POS converter made by a POS guy. He ripped off alot of people including me.
Had one that lasted 5 passes. Ultimate Lenny ( at the time he was working with Frank Lupo at Dynamic) told me to throw it away- he wouldn't even TRY to repair it!

You want firsthand experience? I had a brain fart years ago and bought a GER converter. I started the install and when I tried to put the last converter bolt in I found the threads in the lug were damaged. I had to get a heli coil kit and repair the threads before I could finish the install. They have absolutely no quality control. It was an 1800 stall low performance 11 inch unit, it worked okay once the repair was made. I called GER to tell them about the problem and they told me I damaged the threads. Would I buy another GER converter? NOOOO, you couldn’t give me one. It’s PTC or Conan for me.

While I do agree with everybody to run fast from it...they actually made a few that worked fine.
A member and buddy (forphorty) had one that held up for many years in his 68 Sat. It finally went south and he wen to a Dynamic. He said the car doesnt feel any different than with the GER.
The GER performed well but cracked three flexplates in a 4-5year time span. One OEM, the rest SFI MP. On the last flexplate swap, i notice the converter snout was cracked as well. I switched to Dynamic. It's been over 10 years, no problems.

I've had a GER "Thunderbolt" in my car (904 trans) for 18 years now - it must have been made the ONE WEEK they made a decent converter. Good street manners and 4000 stall when it needs to. My car has run consistant 11.30 at 120, with 1.50-1.55 60's for years with it - went 3 tenths slower with a $500+ 10" T/A converter in it. Now, I will say their customer service is non-existant. I cracked the pump drive - C/M snout wasn't avalible when ordered in 1994 - and sent it to them for a new one, since NOBODY else would touch it. Repair went from a quoted 3 weeks, to 7 weeks, to "we never got it". Well, UPS tracking showed they had signed for it, so then they "found" it and put it in the tail end of the repair line. Didn't even have the decency to put it at the front of the line. When I finally got it back, I will say it has been flawless and owes me nothing if it fails tomorrow. Which it may - next time out, it will see a 100 shot as a "how do ya like me now"

As far as the good converters from GER goes even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then. My experience with a 10" was sloppy and inefficient. When I replaced it with a continental the 60', mph and drive ability all improved. IMO junk.
Getting old just means you were smarter than some and luckier than others.
