I have been running Felpro 1009's since I built this 496. Just tore the heads off to replace valve springs and check things over.
The firing ring is real close to the chamber on the Eddy Performer heads, but have been sealing good.
Question is...I have a set of 8519 PT1 Felpro's in my gasket kit. They seem to have a slightly larger bore than the 1009's, and are about .044" thick uncompressed. The 1009's have compressed down to about .037".
Will these be OK to sub for the 1009's and still keep my quench the same?
At 75.00 a piece for 1009's, I realy don't want to fork out a bunch of money if the 8519's will work.

After torching a cylinder head I found Edelbrock made a much better head gasket as far as fitting the combustion chamber. These are made for your eddie heads. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-7325

The 8519PT-1 are the standard Fel Pro brand OEM replacement gaskest for B&RB, not intended for high compression application. I have blown them out by getting the tune up to lean on the dyno on a race motor(12.8 to 1 Comp Ratio) If your under 11.5 to 1 compression ratio you should be good using them, I have I have also used the Eddy grey compostion head gaskets with no problems I'm not sure if they where the same gaskets as the link shows though

Compression is 11.2 ... pistons are .005 below deck. I kinda thought that the 8519's were just a stock replacement. I'm thinking that from what has been said, they will work OK.

Same here, and I ordered from Summit.Edelbrock now uses the 8519 as their gasket since Corteco was bought out by ROL.

Just my opinion, but I would invest in a set of Cometics. Worth every penny they cost to me.

I recommend Cometic head gaskets. The 8519 gaskets will damage the head and then you'll have to pay to surface the heads. Even the 1009 gaskets usually damage the cylinder heads enough to require a skim cut.

How thick are the Cometics when compressed? I'd like to stay in the.036 - .044 range.

You can get the cometic gaskets in various thickness, but 0.040" is pretty standard. They are reusable, but cost about $80+ each.
I have used the standard Fel-Pro at 11:1 compression without problems, but the ring did make a nice impression in the head.

Yeh..I defintely have the fire ring impressions on my heads. I've had them off a couple of times and just installed new 1009's and never had a leak (that I know of) ...maybe just lucky.
I guess one would have to order direct from Cometic?? Or are there any dealers for them (Pac Northwest area)?

I am about to put together a 440 with the Stealth heads with 9:1 compression with a set of 1009's.
Am I going to run into trouble down the road? It is just a street cruiser!
Thanks Mike

So thumper are you running the 1009"s that have not been a problem for years?
Mike
p.s. You sure are spending a lot of time on here for a Saturday. You should be working on the car or getting your "Honey DO" list done!

No, I`m using the marine gaskets and have for 13+ years. No "honey do" list here and as soon as I get my friends plasma cutter, Thumper will start dropping the pounds and et`............

Any signs of brinelling (indenting) around the chambers w/ the 17059 Marine-spec gasket? I thought that was only an issue w/ the 1009 because of the built-in steel o-ring in the fire ring.

FWIW, the 17059 and the 8519s have identical dimensions (4.50" bore & ~ .040" compressed thickness), but different construction materials. I have a set of both on hand and verified the bore dimensions and UNcompressed thickness, but don't have any used ones to check compressed thickness.

Also, according to Fel-Pro's tech papers, their Marine-spec head gaskets are made the same as the race series (like the 1009), except they don't have the steel o-rings in the fire rings.

So what you're saying is that the 17059 Marine is about .044" uncompressed ...same as the 8519 ?
