I know for a long time that if your car came with leaf springs you had to run them in Super Stock. I have heard that coil over and ladder bars are now legal to run without leaf springs?
Any body know about this?

You are correct........ The modified tubs must be of the same material and gauge as the original tubs.........
Many SS cars are running on leaf springs these days ,with the latest technology in tires and shocks..........

Most upper class cars have 4 links/coil overs. Some lower class cars still have ladder/leafs.

There are a few Mopar Stock & Superstock racers who run Cal Tracks leaf springs & shocks and run either NHRA class on 9X30 drag slicks three come to mind Jim Duraham, Don Little and Steve Wann,(Div 7) have run Stock and SuperStock with the same car, just different motor combo's.

NHRA 2013 rule book - I underlined the pertinent parts. Quote:
SUSPENSION, Rear Stock rear suspension may be changed as follows: Lateral movement inboard permitted when rear frame and/or suspension is moved in for tire clearance. Mounting points may be moved in on axle housing and frame as required. In addition to stock suspension, a pivot below rear axle housing is permitted. Axle housing may rotate in spring mount; side movement of housing limited to 1/4-inch. Spring mounts may slide on leaf-spring equipped cars no more than 1/2-inch forward or rearward. See illustration in General Regulations 3:4 for acceptable pivot mount for rear suspension. Leaves may be added or removed. Rear leaves may be aftermarket fiberglass type. Rear leaf springs need not be same length as original. Coil springs may be replaced with similar configuration units; rear trailing arms may be replaced or removed when using four-link or ladder-bar suspension. Removal of original springs permitted. Coilover shocks permitted in rear suspension. Shocks may be relocated; minimum down travel on shock is 1 inch. Rear trailing arms may be replaced with OEM-type aftermarket units, round tubing permitted, 1-inch-minimum diameter. Bushing must be in trailing arms that allow suspension movement but keep parts from being noticeably loose. See General Regulations 3:4.

I don't know about IHRA rules but NHRA did rescind that rule sometime in the past. Call both tech. dept or better yet E mail both and get a WRITTEN reply so you have a written record of there decisions
IHRA typically follows NHRA rules. Most of the differences between the two are around IHRA-only classes and some HP factors.

Super Stock still requires the stock floor in front of the rear seat area to the firewall and between the frame rails all the way to the tailight panel. Beyond that, many of the state of the art, high end cars look like an OEM/Pro Stock hybrid.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

70 Duster is a natural J car and a tough combo to make fast, K you would have to add a lot of weight.Look at some of the later 360 combo's or GT class.
The 340 is a good combo to make fast......... With the GT you are giving up .10 right off the bat that you can't pick up with that body style...........

JSR, I`m not 100% sure but I think thats my friends old S/S Duster that he ran many years ago in S/S I, J, or K automatic with a 340. My engine builders as was (and still is ) his alsos name is on the side of the car. I asked him and showed him the pic from your ad and he`s not sure. His car was originally done by a guy named Hayes in Paterson. He sold the car many years ago to a guy that put the big block in it, who might have had it redone by Quay. But if its the same car it ran S/S originally. Bill Rolik had a similar car built by the same guy.

Mark Howes is the fastest high compression 340 and there are only two guys running the big valve high compression combos.
Have you looked at the HP on that engine lately??? 290hp less than a low comp small valve 360 in GT..........
But if you want to put together a lower budget SS engine the 360 is the way to go.........

I know it well, 340 high compression big valve is rated at 279 this year it was 283. I run 71 340 high compression with magnum heads rated at 288.
