Hey guys, I need some help. I am building this 70 Challenger rt/se and I am finally at the interior stage. I ordered just about everything Legendary had for this car. However they did not have a overhead console. I had 2 old original beat up pieces of junk ones though. So I used the original and made a mold then made a new one out of glass. Now my question is this How does it mount in the car?? I cannot for the life of me figure it out! So any help would be greatly received!Pics of hardware, location etc. Also I posted a question about 70 dart hood scoops location

overhead headliner board is first secured on the sides with special headliner clips that came on these cars originally. regular h/liner has small rounded metal clips, these are flat and about a 1/2 inch square. don't have one in front of me or I'd send a pic. so you hold the h/liner board up, attach three clips on each side, will hold it up. now I'm assuming you left the special overhead console brackets in the center of the roof and those brackets in the rear that look like saws. those saws are special to these models only, different than regular headliner part. make sure the wiring from the console is coming down correctly. then you'd do the sail panels, then the rear plastic surround. finish with the long metal trim pieces on each side, finally the front pillar moldings. anyway, might not have remembered everything but that's how I've done it.

overhead console has sharp clips on the bottom side, you'll need to measure where the console goes, then make holes in your fiberglass to attach to headliner board. again, don't have one in front of me but the front of the overhead console is pretty close to the front of the h/liner board, maybe an inch back.
first problem I see is that you still have the regular headliner bows installed. you'll need to get rid of them before attempting to install. .also, have ready the screws that attach the rear of the console to the center roof bracket, looks like its in place.

OK, here's anyother key to this puzzle. you've already got the wiring harness installed. I would remove the wiring and h/liner bows. you need to put the entire assembly of the console, board and wiring in the car as one subassembly. best with a buddy to help. I didn't understand at first that you're all disassembled.
hopefully, another member has some pics.

What do you mean "get rid of" I need them for my headliner from Legendary... You also said that it attaches to the headliner, is that vinyl headliner that strong? Thanks...

It looks like someone converted your SE headliner back into a standard Challenger headliner. Headliner bows are not used on SE cars, you need one of these:

www.seheadliners.com

Your overhead console attaches to this hardboard headliner and then the whole thing attaches to the roof of the car with the hardware Wate is describing.

Dr. Red,

I've done two R/T SE's now and yes you def. have the standard headliner setup currently. The old headliner boards typically warped badly or crumbled when removed as I expect the same happened to yours. There is a vendor I saw at the Nats this year making the consoles, Headliner boards and sail panels. There advertised on Moparts as a vendor and the website is www.seheadliners.com. The stuff looked really good! No idea of the cost but its the only option other than making your own or find a very expensive used one.

That's the fun of them...Not everyone can find and deal with the pink elephant so they buy a camaro or mustang..
Be glad you were'nt at this point a few years ago or you'd really be looking for an original headliner...Not sure what colors are offered on the repops...Anyhow
I hope you measured and glassed in the metal anchors on the backside of the overhead console you made...You need those to slide the clips on... Then the unit secures to the headliner board as others have mentioned here...

Yes I got the "slides" in but both of my originals only had 4 not six as your shows....

Hi
Anybody has some pictures of Challenger SE sail panels?

how they are mounted?

do I need small wire rods/springs? or these are only for standard headliner?

The 70 SE sail panels just pull off and snap back on via a regular looking door panel clip mounted in the center of the sail panel. If you need a picture, I can get you one later today.

if you can please take some pictures of the panel itself and its mounting
I do not have it at all and need to make one, is it originally moulded? or just cutted from cardboard?

Originals are definitely moulded, I have heard that repops were out and just cardboard. I'll try to attach a pic, if it does not work, send me a PM with your email address.

On the ones I made I just got some of the Cardboard / fibreboard stuff mentioned, then used some box cardboard to make a pattern( with the headliner and rear 1/4 inserts installed) then I wet down the fibreboard and molded it to my pattern and let it dry and tada! cover it with the same stuff you covered your headliner with and your are done. I will post some pics up in a few..
