HELP!!! My pcm is flaking out and the battery charge goes from min to max in a split second. Is there a fix for this other than a new pcm? I have already tried a new alternator.

Junkyard or ebay a used computer. Easiest way. I know on some computers guys have been able to convert to external voltage regulators.

I've called all the local yards and none to be had here. Ebaggers want way more than a new one costs for a used one. Thought I might try someone on here and see if they know of an alternative.

Convert to an electronic voltage regulator and carry on, until something else craps out on the pcm.

Use an ignition hot wire to power the regulator and wire it like the old race cars were done for the electronic regulator. Then disconnect the alt field wire out of the computer and tape it up good. Gene

Just keep in mind the computer will be throwing codes if you do this.

If not already done this would make a good tech article for the archives. Pictures would be important with the directions.

The alternator will have two field wires. Wire it up like this diagram shows. Ignore the blue part, that's just what you would remove if converting from a 1 field alternator to a 2.

I would imagine the two stock wires coming off the alternator could be taped up and set aside. At a minimum the computer is going to throw a charging circuit code.

Be aware that I have seen alot of Dakota's from 88 to about 94 get corrosion in the wire harness anywhere between the battery and the firewall on the hot feeds. Seen many a PCM's replaced because of this. Had one would overcharge because the PCM 12 volt sense wire was not seeing much more then 3 volts from corrosion in the harness that built up. Ron

Also in reference to the above, strip the harness at the Y under the power distribution box next to the battery. There are three wires crimped to one,you will probably find the crimp is corroded to the point it will fall apart if you move it.Regardless, strip the wires and solder and heat shrink them,it will save you a problem later.

Also, trying to find a 2nd generation PCM in a junk yard is not easy if you have a 5.2

I'm having issues w/ my 88 Ramcharger as well. Good luck at least yours is starting. I'm going to recheck all my wires after work today.

To both OP and Mr Yuck I have computers here for both of those collecting dust...
I have 1 for the 88 RC and should have 2 or 3 for the Dakota
I know I have a 93 Dak V8 one, and "should" have both a 92 and a 94 V8 in the attic have to dig a bit;
I also have a 94/95 3.9 one.

the good part is that from 92-95 you can interchange different year computers between them. I am running a 94 M/T one on my 93 Dakota that I converted from an A/T

Thanks. I let you know if I need it. I know on my 95 Dak the MP computer really woke up the engine. If the 95 works on the 92 I'd get one.

I would welcome a performance pcm if I could find one. They don't make them anymore and are hard to find in good/usable condition. If you do find one they are stupid expensive and I'm on a cheep beer budget!!
