The myth that if you get the "magical" paint chip match, color code, mix formula, use the same mfg as OEM that you'll get a perfect match, etc....there are so many variables, the perfect match can be screwed by the mixer shorting the formula either on purpose, or by accident, an incorrect shade base, painter technique, coverage, etc, etc, will/can effect the outcome of a so-called "perfect match"... I think your first question/request should be how you want to finish the car?, OEM, meaning it will be a straight enamel job, or Base Coat/Clear Coat (BC/CC), or other? inorder for a paint recommendation...

I own a small Mopar paint and body restoration shop here in Phoenix. I also prefer PPG products but before I spend big bucks on 2-3 gallons of paint I have small samples made up in both PPG's Deltron Basecoat and Dupont's Chromabase. I do spray outs of both to see which one is correct. There is usually one that looks closer to original than the other. It has been about 50/50 so far as to which brand I choose. One or the other has always worked for me so far. Of course I always get customer approval before buying. So my advice is get as many sprayuots as needed to find the color YOU are going to be happy with.
So which do you prefer for initial color matching, database formula/alts or colorkey card formula match, prior to a sprayout.

I've used ppg and dupont in this color and I think the dupont looked better. I can see your point though as you go to a mopar show and there are many different shade, some are too dark like a ralley green, others too light like citron.

That's interesting. When I was getting ready to paint my 'Cuda I decided on B/C so I bought a pint of Dupont Chromabase and sprayed the trunk. I wasn't happy with the color--looked to 'milky'. So I bought some PPG Concept single stage and it was much better--a little yellower and much more bright and alive.
Dupont MAY be more accurate to original, but I have compared it to an original paint road runner and it varies from that too.
I agree its a color that varies a lot when compared side-by-side on cars.

This was about 10 years apart and I had used the ppg the first time. Primer used under, color, thickness, etc... can change how it looks. I used buff/yellow on both as I figured if they got chipped, it wouldn't be as noticeable with gray underneathe.

Muscle-era Mopars were painted in Ditzler, which is now known as PPG.
When I painted FC7, I went out & got pints of 6 different paint companies mixes of FC7. PPG was dead nuts far better than the others.
Did my '69 Charger a few years ago on PPG FJ5, DBU base with 2002 clear. The color is very vibrant & "pops". Like others have said the DuPont mix was a little "milky" looking, it did not have the wow factor PPG's mix had. If you do plan on using PPG FJ5, stay away from their lower Omni line. It's water thin, no coverage, and the color is way off.

Yes "Plum Crazy" is all over the place in color at the big shows. I agree with you that PPG has the best formula for it. However when it comes to B5 Blue Dupont's Chromabase is a better match than PPG. That's why it's a good Idea to do sprayouts on every color.
