OK, I recently installed a 2 field square back alternator, Powermaster. I have grounded one of the field connection so it will properly work with my 69 Bee. It charges fine but the voltage is going to 15 volts. I have burned up the MP constant out put. A 50.00 NAPA unit starts smoking after 30 seconds, the other regulator I am using goes to 15 volts but does not smoke. If I turn on head lights voltage drops to 14 to 14.5 vclts. New wiring harness.

HELP!

what does the voltage read at the VR.
and are you sure you have a good ground to it?

I second this. Make sure the VR is very well grounded. If not, it will not be able to "sense" propeerly and corectly meter the voltage.

Good Luck

I'd check the voltages at every pertinent connection and might toss an orig alt back on to see if the problem is inside the alt

THANK YOU! You would think going to the firewall like before would be sufficient. I ran an additional ground to the copper ground on the 3 speed wiper motor. Problem solved... holding 13.5 volts with Fuel pump and other electronial funtions Thanks again

get a good ground wire between batt and rad core support ground provision, then the ground strap between block and firewall and you should be done.

that's how factory did

Glad you fixed it as I was also going to say it almost had to be a bad ground to the reg on the way that system functions. Ron

I am having a similar problem (voltage is spiking off and on) and I assumed it was a grounding problem. But I have one of those Denso alternators with the internal voltage regulator. How would I address a ground issue with that setup?
