As I've read in several other postings lately, I also have an inaccurate fuel sending unit in my 1970 Coronet. Anything less than half full and it shows just between below Empty to slightly above Empty.

I am going to try my luck at a new unit to see if I can get a better reading.

My question is -- Can I remove the sending unit with the tank in the car? And do I need to drain the gas tank dry first?

Also, a second question -- Has anyone sent off their sending unit along with their fuel gauge to have them calibrated together? Does this work to get an accurate reading?

Thank you for all the info!

I have the same problem on my 65 Coronet.
I took it out to test it and it does go to full
and empty but like you when my car gets down to about a half tank the gauge shows empty.
The sender must not be the correct one for the car.You can take the sender out in the car, just make sure you have a half tank or less.

put an ohm meter on it when you get it out.
See if there is a dead spot/high reading point in it.
The spring could have gunk on it and cause it to not read correctly at the range you see empty at when half full.

You can also bend the arm or the arms holding where empty is.

Thanks guys for the help! So, it sounds like with 1/2 a tank or less, I should be ok to remove the sending unit while the tank is in, right?

Has anyone tried buying a new unit and sending it in along with their fuel gauge to have it calibrated? I was just wondering if that might be a possibility?

Thanks Moparts!
