That is a bummer of the first magnitude.
Glad it didn't wind up worse , but in spite of confining the damage to inside the motor , that is plenty ugly.
Ouch !

Man I am sorry to see that. You have one of my favorite cars on the site because it is raced and driven so often. Could a broken valve spring cause that chain of events to begin? Again very sorry for your new engine.

WOW Dustin I am so sorry. Hate to see that damage. Do you have another block to work with? What block are you running?

The springs (Comp) and retainer (Comp tool steel?) both look fine, Need to check the pressure on it. So far found I have found 1 of the 2 keepers, other is probably in the bottom of the pan or something, I haven't spent too much time looking around.

At this point I think the entire short block is a write off. The crank was already 10/10 so I doubt it will clean up. I don't remember what series valve it was off the top of my head, it wasn't top tier but it wasn't bottom shelf either. I don't think the valve is to blame, but I could be wrong. I had a ton of P to V clearance.

I'm pretty sure the head can be fixed/saved, but wont know for sure until I take it off. At this point I'm thinking about switching to a big block or maybe 3G Hemi. If anybody has anything feel free to PM me.

I'm wearing all black today...

Is the stem straight? What was the open pressure of the springs?

Did it turn a bearing and cause the rod to break or break a rod bolt? Could be something else but most times that's what happens.

It almost looks like the rod is still in one piece and attached to the crank, it just spent some quality time destroying the cylinder after the piston came apart. Hard to tell without seeing the crank side though.

I feel your pain man. I'd probably start throwing things across the room after witnessing what was under the intake manifold....

Yes, stem is still straight, pulled right out of the guide from the top. I don't remember the open pressure off the top of my head. 145# on the seat comes to mind. It was just a solid FT cam, double springs spec'd for the cam, installed by the porter.

Rod is still attached to the crank and in 1 piece as far as I can tell.

My guess is the head came off the valve.
