seems fine as long as your foot is on the gas, no noise, When you let off the gas and coast it has a howl. Any ideas? What to check?

Howl is usually related to ring gear backlash, but often once it develops it can't be adjusted away.

Did it suddenly START doing this?

Get another rear. The rear side of the teeth on your ring gear are worn due to an incorrect contact pattern and you are unlikely to be able to adjust the howl out of it. Did you buy it that way it is it a new setup?

Bought the car that way. Haven't tried any adjustments. Wondered if to much play in pinon

Low amount of gear oil will cause this also. Make sure case is full of gear oil.

Like said above - once a howl develops no amount of adjusting will correct it. either get a different set of gears or live with it. Some times some thicker lube will help some. Gear noise like you discribe will let you live a long time.

Like said , once it howls chances are it's always going to.

And some manufactures gears howl no matter how they're setup

A loose pinion nut will also cause this noise. Drop the driveshaft and make sure the pinion nut is tight. While you're under there grab the yoke and see if there's any up & down movement, there should be none.

I love the smell of Deer guts in the morning, it smells like... VICTORY!
