My old converter was a Dynamic and worked pretty well, but was a bit loose on the street and Highway.
I spoke to Ultimate and told them I had a 4,150 # Charger with 3.91:1 gears and a 500" stroker making over 600+ HP, but wanted a converter that does not slip much on the street. They built a custom 9" converter that is great on the street (feels pretty tight and dies not seem to slip much at light throttle), and will flash to 5,000 when I go WOT. So I'm a Happy customer even though the converter was kind of expensive.

I know I am alone here but here goes, and then let the stone throwing begin. I have never had any luck with PTC in an NA application. In fact I would go so far as to say had nothing but problems. Customer service was great but way to many issues with simple things soured me on them.

No, you aren't alone.

Exactly!!

Well I have used PTC, Dynamic and Continental. All were good, no real issues to think of. They were also close enough so that sending them back to get another 100-200 rpms in or out of them was not worth it.

I currently have a Neal Chance bolt together I got with my current trans set up. If I can get them to get it to flash where I need it, I will use it. If not, up for sale and I will be in the market.

I have had good luck with Turbo Action and Coan in the past.I have used SMR trans out of Canada for my last three converters and they hit the nail on the head every time.

Dynamic......they are 0 for 2 and their won't be a third strike.

It is funny to see how many times this post comes up and how so many hate some companies and some love the same ones. There is alot of good converter companies out there and sometimes an issue is the customers fault and sometimes its ther converter companies. I would think one of the biggest problems is incorrect info but thats just my guess. Myself I would have no problem dealing with Turbo Action or Dynamic since I have used both with great results. Also ATI , PTC , Continetal , Ultimate and many otther good name companies would be no problem for me to use. As I said I have only used Dynamic and Turbo Action with great results but I see many very good running cars with different brand converters that have to work good since many of the cars out there run so good with many different brands. My opinion to someone is talk with someone they know and trust that has a good running car with a converter that works good and go with that. Ron

The guys at PTC are excellent to deal with. So is Lenny at Ultimate. I had terrible luck with both of these companies on a 7" high RPM converter. PTC made an 8" for someone else that ran great in my car, but the one they built for me just would not run with my engine. We just could not find the right match to my combo.

Now on my nitrous stuff PTC was the bomb with the 9.5" they built me. Turbo Action and Dynamic could not get it through their thick skulls my small block nitrous motor made more torque than their big block customer engines did. I always got converters that I could just blow through with my torque flite trannies. Very dissapointing.

Turbo Action was the bomb with my basic small blocks. That 4400 shelf stock 8" converter was the bomb.

A1 is a very good company but probably too expensive for the average racer. ATI may be too. But, they are good converters.

Thanks for the info I think I'm going to call PTC,ATI and Ultimate Monday and see what they have to say. Not to start a pissing match but what exactly was the problem with the PTC and was it recently. PM me if you don't want to post it here. I've had some well respected people recommend them. Some people like dynamic. They missed my last converter by a mile (8inch 5000) which only flashed 3400 and then wanted me to pay for them to fix it and that wasn't going to happen and didn't, needless to say they will never get another penny from me.

I will gladly post it here. We had everything from ring gear and mounting pads in the incorrect place, no mid plate just a standard 727TF deal, to way under stall requests(with dyno sheets)to two that broke while testing the stall speed in the pits and two more that broke on the track within the first few passes. I had one car that ended up with 8 different convertors in it, all of which had one issue or another, most never even made in the car due to manufacturing issues. PTC did send a free spare at one point as well. That car ended up with a ATI and it worked flawlessly first time. I am sure I am the only one with such issues.

I say the customer service was great but in my mind it dont mater how good it is when it is costing me money adn simple things are being done incorrectly. I would have thrown in the towel on two cars much sooner had it not been for my customers stubborness. Between shipping costs and paying for the labor it got VERY expensive for a couple of people. To the point I was not charging labor anymore as I took pity. In the end if someone wants me to install a PTC I just send them away if we cannot convince them otherwise. I have a toolbox full of PTC "kills" from two cars. I lost [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] but I believe 14 stickers for two pretty simple straight forward deals, both NA, both stroker BB's with 727's. Both ended up with a different manufacturers parts that work flawlessly and are still in place.

Dont get me wrong I have had issues with other brands as well. Just not to this extent.

Well...if this helps I will interject this. I had the Arrow out for the first time this weekend. With the tiny 850 carb the car clicked off five consecutive 5.72 and change 1/8th mile passes and seven consectutive 1.26 and change 60ft's....this was over two days.

The converter is an Ultimate...and it as worked this well behind three different motors. Lenny is a pleasure to deal with and he won't sell you something you don't need.

oh....and the car went 8.97 in the heat last night so I got my first 8 second slip...

hense the "east coast" in his reply probably.

Lots of good converter builders. Sometimes it's best to go with who's closer as it will save you more $$ and time shipping if you need adjustments. Unfortunately if I were in that situation I'd be paying for shipping from Lenny's shop to AZ. Been running his stuff in my old car since 94, and my dads car too. He's been a pleasure to work with.

Since I use a P/G.... For consistency, Hughes... And if you live on the left coast, Jim or Kevin will always be there..

Do I think Hughes is the best??? NO!!! But VERY consistent..

I am going with A1 now and we'll see the difference between a Hughes GM95 and a new A1 custom.

For a torqueflight, I would call Pro Trans and talk to Dave..

When I had a TF, Dave speced out a converter for my car.. At that time it was Munsinger..

Mike takes a long time, but is super talented..

I know Dave @ Pro Trans is a dealer for both A1 and Munsinger..

With a TF one should run a mid plate so you can get a GM style converter.. Many more choices that way..

Chris..

I run a JW ultra comp. Seems to work real good. I also have ran a cheap model 4000 stall hughes non nitrous rated and that thing held up to quite a few 200 shots on a full throttle switch.. lol

I had 8" ptc in my last 9000rpm sb w2 engine which worked great.
Now with my new R5 engine i bought 7" converter because lack of torque and ordered with 7200 stall speed. It came with 8600stall and didnt quite was what i expected. So it got tightened and now it is 7500stall. That worked great for 3 runs and then my speed came down every run. It took less than 10 runs and now its good for trash can. It heats the oil super fast and car is atleast 0.5s slower than before.

I dont know what broke in it. Stall is still the same but it doesnt run as good as it was. Maybe sprag failure? Transmission was also checked and it works ok. PTC converter should take 800+ hp without problems more than 10 runs?

Oh
I am with Al and others on this subject, I had GREAT customer service with PTC but I broke 3 convertors and the last one stalled 400 rpm to high. I gave him the dyno sheets and all the info, told him 5700 is what I wanted, the one he sent was 6100. I got tired of rebuilding the trans everytime the conv broke. It GOT Very Expensive eveytime to replace bearings, seals etc in the trans from metal shavings.

I had the trans out 4 times in 1 year and I never want to see another PTC conv as long as I am racing.
