Did they give you the right pitch belt for the pulleys? The fact that it's so deep in the pulleys and cupped leads me to believe it's the wrong belt.

That's what I'm thinking.

The top of the belt is too wide for the pulleys. When it comes to V belts, not all Vs are the same. The V on your pulleys seem to be a narrower angle than the belt. That means your belt was riding on the upper edges and not the full depth of the V.

I think that belt has been slipping for a while causing premature wear. Get a new one on there and see how it looks. Clutch fan and higher amp alternators will smoke a belt in a short time. Needs to be re-tightened after belt seats in.

You may be right, but i do check the tightness of the belts each month or so.

I spent some time cleaning it up today as well.

Finally found the problem to be the bolt that holds the alternater bracket to the engine block had backed out and cut into the belt.

Thanks for the help guys!

Look again, the long bolt that holds the alternator to the head could have backed out a bit and made contact with the belt...chewing it up

Thats happened to me before

Good luck...

Close...just the wrong bolt

Glad you found it, your Roadrunner looks great

I would still look at this too. Nice car! Glad you found the immediate problem.
