I was doing a car show today and when I opened the hood I saw the pulley for the alternator had self destructed and torn it's self to shreds. Luckily it lasted till I got home, but the belt is only about 500 miles old. It basically came apart and unraveled. The power steering belt is still perfect and I replaced then at the same time.

I was wondering if maybe over tightening it could cause this sort of premature wear??

The alternator is one of the aftermarket PowerMaster units Summit sells. It has been on the car for about 8 years and this is the first time i have had an issue like this. I use only the good Gates brand belts too.

Any ideas??

Wood or steel pulley?

Have you checked the cable?

Look again, the long bolt that holds the alternator to the head could have backed out a bit and made contact with the belt...chewing it up

Thats happened to me before

Good luck...

If your alignment is good I'd say overtightening and sometimes a belt is just defective & doesn't last long but that is very rare

Maybe that was it but i was always told to tighten the belt to the point that you could just turn the belt about 1/4 way around.

I've heard that too but (just me) I go a bit looser

I've heard that too

That's a pretty subjective way to measure tension.... Is this a average guy twist, a Goldberg twist or some 12 YO kid twist? Are you going for a 1/4 twist with all your strength or a comfortable grab & twist...... Point is it could easily be to tight but with hands on experience you get a feel for what it needs... The proper way to set it is with a belt deflection gauge, good luck finding one.... Typically I go for about 1" of deflection in the middle of the belt when pressing with my thumb, but again, how hard do you press...

As has been mentioned pulley alignment, pulley condition, other things contacting the belt or just a defective belt... I don't think Gates has taken production to China butttttttttt...

The pully started to defray so badly the loose fibers grabbed the horn relay wires and yanked them into the alternator.

is that just the lighting, or is there an odd cup to the belt in the center?
like it dips in the middle?

It did have an cup to it yes. Well none of the local parts stores sell GATES brand belts in that size so i will order one tomorrow. I am doing a major cleaning now in the engine bay anyway.

If you have a laser pointer, set it up so that it is centered on one of the pulleys, then rotate it to the other pulleys and see if it's centered on them as well. Looks like you might have a bit of a misalignment. Also inspect each pulley to make sure there are no burrs that might be shredding your belt.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Did they give you the right pitch belt for the pulleys? The fact that it's so deep in the pulleys and cupped leads me to believe it's the wrong belt.

I have always used the stock belt for the 383 and this is the first time it has ever happened.
