Hello all,

I bought a lot of top end parts from someone who had a cracked block on their 340. This set included a retrofit hydraulic roller for a small block.

I checked out the lifters, and I found that two of them (on two different pairs) have the below issue:

The plunger is sitting down in the bore. I can't just take the snap ring out and disassemble and clean it because the plunger doesn't clear the attachment piece for the link bar. When I blow in to the oil hole on the side with a very, very low pressure, the plunger rises freely.

Is there really an issue with these? Any way I can resolve it without replacing these lifters? I believe that they are Cranes...and they're $83 a pair from what I've seen.

Thanks for the help!

i have been wondering the same thing, i have a set of used stock magnum roller lifters that are the same way. not all of them sit below the clip though.

Is there supposed to be a light spring in there? 60psi should pump it up fine, but if it doesnt then you have to dig into the motor again.

can you compress the ones that are up. I think all they would need is to be pumped up..

I am truckless..

There's a spring that lightly holds them in the up position. When the oil pressure rises on engine startup, it pushes the piston up. The piston moves up or down to take up the tiny bit of slack in the valvetrain. Bottom line, I don't think it's something to worry about.

Well when I blew air into them, they would rise to the snap ring and then fall back down. I thought that there was a spring that held them up, even though it was light.

The other lifters are impossible to compress by hand, but I'm sure they would if I hooked them up to spring pressure.

So should I soak these in some oil and see what happens?

Put them in the engine and run it. Worry about a real problem.
