Hey guys the trans guy I use to build my tranmissions was going to put a 4 pinion piece in place of the 3 to handle more torque for my stroker. I have decided to try and get a gear vendor unit and I am worndering will ths enhancment be necessary with the gear vendro unit or is the combo of the 727 and gear vendor bullet proof on theyre own. Also I am curious what all could be added to a sure grip pumpkin to make it more durable, also if I have a 323 unit is it possible to buy parts for 410 unit or is that alot of work for what your getting? Also how hard are 410 units to find? Thanks guy!

Translation--- wants to know if he needs the 4th thing in the trans to handle more power for his stroker and a gear vendors or is the 3 standard thing is enough. 2nd ? was what he needs to make the 8 3/4 stronger to handle more power as well.

Oh,, a 4 planetary unit stronger than a 3 planetary unit. Id highly suggest a bolt in sprag. Use a clutch style suregrip unit..

Sorry guys I did mean the 4 pinion planetary gears. I couldn't think when I made the post. Also how can I tell if it's a clutch style unit or a less desirable unit? Thanks

4 pinions are stronger than 3, 5 are stronger than 4!
The bolt-in sprag is a good idea, as is a billet drum (so I've heard).

The Gear Vendors unit doesn't decrease the load on the transmission, so transmission strengthening is still a good thing.

You need to find pictures of the two different Sure Grip units and look at what you have. If it's a 489 case, it should have the cone type, if a 742 case it should be the clutch type and if it's a 741 it could be either. And, of course, anything could have been swapped into any case over the last 40 years!

Can you swap your 3.23s for 4.11s? Sure, this is a job for a rear end specialist, but it's done all the time. The 3.91 gearset seems to be the most popular.

Not necessarily true...the weak part of any aluminum planetary is the spline, not the pinion count.

Well, you know a heck of a lot more than I do about this, that's for sure. But isn't it true that regular TFs got 3 pinions, Motorhomes and some HP engines got 4 pinions, and Hemis got 5?

My DC Chassis books are packed away so I can't check.

I'm thinking your confusing clutch count vice pinon count in the trans.

Pretty sure anything more than a 3 pinion is an aftermarket deal on a 727.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

I have a 727 equipped GV behind my 511 stroker. My 727 has the three pinion gear, bolt in sprag and a reverse manual VB. I also run a Dana. I have had no problems with my set up.

My trans guy used to race a AA/SS Hemi Cuda and they used to take out 2 of the 4 pinions to reduce rotating weight. Never broke a pinion but splines?...

4-pinion planetaries are common in many '67 and later 727's; 5-pinion planetaries first appeared in the diesel OD.
