HEY, MY LA ENGINE WENT SOUTH. I WOULD LIKE TO PUT IN A 2000 5.9 MAGNUM USED ENGINE IN MY 71 DART. I SEE FLEX PLATES OFFERED UP TO 1999.
TO BOLT TO MY 727 WITH A NEUTRALLY BALANCED CONVERTOR. I KNOW THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE INFO UP TO 1999. IS THE 2000 YEAR MOTOR A DIFFERENT ANIMAL? WILL THIS ENGINE BOLT UP?

I used the b&m flex plate for my 65 coronet with 727 and a 2000 5.9 magnum from a durango.
I believe they are the same 98 and up till they stopped making them.
earlier ones used a different flex plate.

neutral converter.
was a 318 car, so the flex plate did the balancing.

Late 90s+ teh Mags got a 1-piece damper/crank pulley, so you'll need to swap to an earlier 5.9 damper if you want to swap to V-belts. Timing cover and water pump and pulleys must be swapped as a system, don't mix-match parts.

There are a lot of subtle tricks on swapping Mags, and 5.9s are a little trickier than 5.2s. nothing that can't be overcome, you just need to know what parts to buy.

Look at Dippy.org, I've posted a bunch of Mag swap details over there (and here too, but not as much).

The support systems are where you are going to spend some time. Cooling and fuel.
A 71 should have the same pump inlet as the magnum, but the new motor runs hotter and will probably require a bigger/better radiator. You will probably need a shroud to go along with the magnum fan.

Somewhere around 99 they moved the weight from the converter to the drive plate (and changed the drive plate to a symmetrical bolt pattern; easy to oval out the one hole). Use the weighted plate and any zero-bal converter.

Might I suggest using the whole donor truck's SMPI system? Awesome swap done that way.

Rick

thanks rick,
do you know about the balancer and pulley situation? I am aware that the timing cover can be swapped out so to utilize my accesories. is the magnum balancer an issue to use with the la timing cover? Also
the la block has its dipstick in the block. where is the magnum dip tube?
thanks

don't forget you will have to run a electric fuel pump unless you bolt the adapter on the front of the cam to bolt the fuel pump eccentric on!

If you do swap to the factory EFI, there's a sensor that reads off the flexplate (bolts to the pass-side rear of cyl head). You'd need the sensor and flexplate setup and also to cut a notch into the trans bellhousing for the sensor to read thru. Make sure to round the corners/edges of the slot to prevent cracking.
