Replace the pump. Sounds like the diaphragm is ruptured. If so, it may be dumping fuel into the crank case also. Check your oil.

"Spitting fuel" in any amount is dangerous enough, but if this is a mechanical pump, it will inject fuel into the crankcase
IN MY LIFE --and I'm and old fart-- I've seen two engines with leaking fuel pumps suffer crankcase explosions. One on a 57 Chev blew off the oil filler cap hard enough to dent the hood, and blew off a valve cover. Another, a ford, pretty much ruined the oil pan!!!!!

If this is a mechanical pump, there is no question in my mind: An oil AND filter change are a lot cheaper than a wiped out crank
