I have 70 Duster with a front end issue that is perplexing me. First some history of the car, total restoration 10 years ago, total suspension rebuild, at the time of restoration. Over the winter we swapped in manual steering unit in place of the power unit. Now the car pulls very hard to the left. I took the car in for an alignment at a professional shop and all parts check out good and alignment is dead on. Car drives fine until I put the pedal down hard or hit a bump. It seems when the front end comes up the alignment is off and pulls real hard to the left. After car sits awhile the alignment is good again. I've been driving this car for over 10 years with no problems. Anyone any thoughts, I'm guessing torsion bars.

pulls to the left would indicate the pass (right) side breaks ain't doing their job but from your descrip some of the symptoms are perplexing

pull the belt off and see what happens. I suspect the power steering is bias to one side and needs adjustment.

Warning!!!!!

Please be real careful if you attempt to do this adjustment yourself you can crash and burn really easiliy if you do not do this right.

Also keep your hands away from the steering wheel after making the adjustment. If miss adjusted you can easily break a arm if caught in the steering wheel

Sorry strike all that you went to manual not the other way around

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Have you tried a set of wheels/tires from another car to rule out a tire/belt shift issue? That is where I would start, John.

It sounds like bump steer, when the suspension travels, its changing the toe causing it to pull. I can scan the chassis manual if you want to see how to change it.

I agree that it changing the toe some how. The car drove perfectly when put in storage last fall. Would the installation of the manual steering unit be the culprit or could it be a bad torsion bar? I am not familiar with bump steer. Thanks

The steering box mounting can vary, which will possibly change the height of the pitman, that hight will affect the bump steer. Tim
