On a 68 Coronet should the number stamped on the id pad next to the starter be the same as the vin tag under the windshield please?
Cheers

Simon

no, 68's are stamped on the engine next to the top/front of the transmission near the oil pressure sending unit. note that not all 68 engines are stamped with VIN numbers.

Hi,
Thank you for taking the time to reply to me.
We are trying to find out if this car is indeed 'matching numbers'.
The number i got from the pad next to the starter begins with 'PT440' and the block shows a casting date of 21/4/67.
If not all 68 motors carry the VIN number is there any way to absolutly confirm or deny the relationship between the engine and the car?
I will check the number up near the oil pressure sender asap

Thank you

Simon

Post pictures of:

The engine block stampings: Upper ID pad, Bell housing flange, oil pan mating surface flange extensions at the rear of the block, and any stampings you find on the transmission pan rail or upper bell housing flange.

The body stampings: Drivers side upper trunk rail under the weatherstriping, the drivers side upper radiator core support

The Fender Tag

The VIN Tag

The PT number is the assembly info , are you sure on that date or is it 4/21/67 ? I know europeans tag the date differently , day then month vs. how the block is annotated month , day.

The VIN as said is on the bellhousing flange near the oil senders on the drivers side of the block , if an auto trans it will be stamped on the trans flange right above the engine , 4 speed is stamped down on the right side on a machined pad along with assembly Info.

If there is no VIN the only thing you can do is go by date coding and there is a gray area going by this.

Hi Gents,
Thank you both for replying.I'm not in a positon to post any pics at this time as the car is 50 miles away from me.
However.......John acting on your info i asked the mechanic who is working on the car to give the block a good scrubbing up near to the pressure sender unit and hey presto we found the correct number. It's pretty faint but good enough for a positive id.
Thank you both for your help

Best Wishes

Simon

Just for giggles I'll make a few comments to help understand the nuances of the 68's. The partial vin may be stamped on the engine and automatic transmission by the oil sender unit (this you already confirmed), with a 4-speed also getting a partial vin on the 4-speeds side raised pad (but not always). The fender tag S.O. number (6 numbers) will be stamped on the radiator support frame (top drivers side) and also stamped on the drivers side trunk lid jam (under the rubber). The only way to definitely tie the engine and transmission to the car (fender tag and radiator support and trunk stamping) is through the buildsheet.
