No matter what i do, the shifter will throw the trans into reverse any time i move the lever in that direction. I understand the red arm is a reverse lock out but it seems this thing is locked in reverse mode. Any thoughts?

I have the same shifter. Although I haven't looked at it in a while I'm pretty sure the red lever is on the other side!!!

Red lever goes on the other side. It blocks that pin from going into the hole it is sticking out of right now. That's what makes it a reverse lock out. Right now it is a reverse lock in.

Actually, you may have the shifter mounted on there backwards.

No it's in the right place and it's not backwards ... just went on ebarf and saw 2 different shifters set up the same way ... thought you would think it's setup wrong because the actual reverse lever is on the other side of the shifter box.

My guess is the shifter is all cruded up and whatever the reverse lockout is it's stuck in the not locked out position.

You mean dissassemble the shifter and place the lever somewhere else? The bolts in the shifter body wont let me swap it around on the bracket

No , disassemble it and clean it and regrease it with fresh Lubriplate . When I buy a used shifter it's the FIRST thing I do .

Yea thats on my list. This was just for mock up on a junk trans. E body stuff in a 65 coronet. Shifter looks clean and has fresh grease. Just didnt expect it to be locked in reverse.

Can any tell me if the bracket the shifter is bolted to is oem or aftermarket?

Yes. It is an old friend.I own 2 of them and they work great.Super Shifter III.
Pretty sure it's on there right.
I can check after dinner.
With the red lever UP, it locks out the reverse gate completely.
With the lever DOWN, it allows you to access the reverse gate normally as with a stock hurst com.plus or whatever.
Maybe you are stuck in the reverse gate, or as someone else said maybe crudded up or seriously mis-adjusted.Check the alignment holes on the levers underneath.Make sure you can slide the Hurst alignment rod tool through all 3 in the "neutral" position.(can sub the right size drill bit if need be)
I will double check mine a little later.
Casey

Definitely not OEM , try this , space the shifer box off the bracket 1/2" using washers between the box and the shifter box.

And yes that is the right mounting plate for that unit.It should work just the way it is.
Oh and probably should back out the stop bolts for now.
Just went out and double checked...
If you are in the reverse gate, and you pull the lever UP you will be locked in the reverse gate until you push the red lever back DOWN
(tried it to be sure)
hope this helps.

John, did you actually see it was misaligned from the pics? Soon as you posted to put washers in it i checked and yes it was off.

Didnt fix the problem though but it was a good tip

I pulled the shifter works as it should. The adjustment on the rods is off. I cant hit the neutral gate perfect in reverse. Thanks for the help guys. I just need my trans to set the linkage up right.

No, A stock shifter mounting block has a recess in it so you can get reverse , when I did the fleabay search the shiter mounting plates that did show , granted for a munice , did have a big hole in it to allow reverse pin movement and that flat plate does not appear to have a hol.

I posted that before seeing Casey's reply on how reverse actually works .

Same shifter I have in my AARCuda, yeah..the stock one is going back in soon..

As said..it is a reverse lockout, move the red handle up and down to lock out reverse.
