The cars were not built in order of VIN.

They were not built on their SPD in a lot of cases, often not even the same month as the SPD.

Incoming stock was mixed with old.

There are too many variables, there is no way to pin down an exact change date because there wasn't one.

I agree that you are not going to pin down a date, but there are going to be some specifics that can be said about the 3 "dimple" upper firewall on a '70 e-body.

Did LA use this part? With e-body production ending in May '70 - did they recieve any of these firewall panels?

Since it appears April in Hamtramck was the some do & some don't "month" are there any built in March with the "dimples" (& I'd say any in Feb. '70 or earlier would be suspect), or any in May without the "dimples" (later w/o would be suspect).

Here's the firewall on my '71 BH23C1B "pilot" car - it appears to have been built in April '70. (not sure if it had "dimples")

When do they start production on the next model year?
My 71 challenger (with dimples) was built in sept of 70. I thought that was an early build for a 71.

"Pilot" cars are built pre-production, production of 1971 model year Chrysler Corp. cars started in August of 1970.

OK...who can tell me that these three dimples are for? What plant, what dates were they used? Any info will help. Some cars have them and some don't.....whats up!!

The three dimples are located on the passengers side, straight up from the blower motor on the cowl.

TROY..
Here is a thread from 3 years back this same question was asked. There is some good info & photos here. In 70 and 71, more & more emission stuff was being required with California cars being about 2 years ahead of the other states..

Also around that time (July, 71) Chrysler was shutting down their Commerce, CA factory just off the 5/710 interchange. So their other factories located outside of CA had to be capable of building cars to meet the CA emission requirements during this changeover..

The LA plant stopped producing E-bodies some time in May of 1970.

Hamtramck produced N95 E-body models for the 1970 model year also.

If you have a March 1970 or later E-body, note the SPD on your tag / broadcast sheet, the actual build month from your original door sticker & whether it has the dimples or not. That will be a start.

This is what I'm looking for. I believe that there might not be a definite date but just looking for a ball park date will work.

With all of this being said....is there anyway by looking at a dash VIN number can you figure out if that car should have the dimples?

Yes & No. A dash VIN# will give you a SPD, but not an actual production date.

It should at least put it in should/might/shouldn't category. I have not cataloged any info on this, but it sounds like GG has.

Hi Scott, Hope all is well.

The Hemi car picture I posted had a date of 808 and there are no dimples. I have been looking and many cars recently and I can't find and clear cut date on when these were used.

are you sure that's not B08?

My old R/T SE has a SPD of 723 & does not have the dimples... I guess it's suspect.....

I have three pictures of the tag and they all look like 808. I don't know if you saw this car Dan. It was that survivor Hemi Challenger that showed up late at the last Spring Fling. Very cool car!!

I was trying to point out that there is some rhyme/reason and/or pattern to the dimple vs. no-dimple. The "maybe" period could be the last 3 months of the year. Your "former" car could be the lone exception for the end of July '70, or the last month of production might all be without.

My 702 SPD '70 Challenger R/T was finished at least 2 weeks late. It has many '71 attributes.
My 801 SPD '71 Barracuda was assembled at least 2 months early. It has many '70 attributes.

Sorry about that. There's sort of a blob of paint right on the SPD there and my camera was not set at the high quality setting.
