With my battery hooked up my starter ign lamp on the column is lit up. It has power all the time. This wire comes out of the time delay relay Are these units known to go bad? Is there a way to check these? or should I look at other wireing possibilities.

Keep in mind Im just a mechanic with only a slight inkling of becoming an automotive electrician. Appreciate the help.

Sure the other guys will chime in soon, but
IIRC it is a super simple thermal deal.
Longer the door is open, longer it will stay on after you close the door.
Usually powered from the dome light circuit???
(Again IIRC) and no I have never seen one go bad, but it probably would stick "on" if the contacts inside fried the right way.

I'm 55 now, no time to waste. Not a week goes by that I don't hear about someone passing on.Let's get out there, smoke some tires, have a beer with a good friend,do what you have always wanted to do.I am pretty sure no one will ever say on their deathbed "gee I'm glad my life was calm and boring"

It doesn't actually power off the dome light circuit, it takes a ground from the door switches which triggers the timer... Once the door is closed it should time out in 30-45 seconds.. I f it still is applying power after a couple minutes with the door closed the timer is probably bad...

Thanks that was it! duh... Now you know why I do not claim to be an automotive electrician. On to the next issue.

I've scratched my head looking for that sort of problem more than I care to admit.... Learn & move on..

yes they can come bad. More time open the door, more heat causes, more risk to get it burnt.

as stated, more time the door open, more time the light will remain lighted on.

average on normal car operating and passengers access, it should kept lighted on around 8 to 15 seconds. It could be even less, maybe 5 seconds if you are fast entering.

Cheap to "fix"... simply replace the unit... $20
