W is not on that list, 1970 code for Dealership Rental Car. An example of one at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/numbersMatching/0B-Tag.jpg

A red car with green interior? No wonder it was a rental

Been doing a lot of research lately on VON numbers and am seeing a pattern that certain regions got pads of order forms that were very close. I believe that the regional office gave out the order pads to the dealers so if cars are from the same region they should have close VON's. This is not a hard and fast rule however, let me give some examples, these are all 1970 Dart's built at the Windsor Plant:

1970 Dodge Dart 4 Door, LH41C0R, SPD B14, sold at Pauley Motors in Shelton, WA - VON is 071482
1970 Dodge Dart 2 Door, LH23G0R, SPD B18, sold at Valley Motors in Auburn, WA - VON is 071523

As you can see very close VON numbers and both were ordered cars. Next example that is just going to confuse people because the VON's are way off from the same dealer:

1970 Dodge Dart 4 Door, LH41C0R, SPD 204, Sold at Tacoma Dodge in Tacoma, WA - VON is 092891
1970 Dodge Dart 4 Door, LH41C0R, SPD 212, Sold at Pauley Motors in Shelton, WA - VON is 093058

It looks like NW cars had at least two different pads of numbers to go from, Pauley Motors also had VON's of 093055, SPD B07, 071463, SPD B14, 093056, SPD 410, 093057, SPD 430, and 093059, SPD 525 which were all 1970 Dodge Dart's. Barry Washington has told me that Mr. Norm's also had two different runs of VON's as well.

If anybody has any dealer paperwork from a 1970 Dart with VON's that are close I'd love to see them. The key is knowing what dealer they came from.

Now I know why they call them spreadsheets....mine keep getting wider. I put a couple more columns in,one for dealer # and the other for dealer name...now they are 20 columns wide.Only problem is I have to backtrack and see if I have dealer info on the 7 or 8 thousand that are already on spreadsheets. We need more goodies like this invoice. It's absolutely loaded with info.
I wonder if Gloria is related to Frank

maybe not ..... If the Challenger is a Y14 "sold" car (ordered at a dealership) it is probably from the pacific northwest. Its VON similarity to the Darts Tom posted is coincedence.

Similar VONs need to be organized based on the car "model", based on the Order Forms the salesmen used to sell cars. Dart had its own form. Challenger had its own form.
My Y14 '70 Challenger R/T has a 076823 VON. I've found a number of 076xxx VON'd Challengers & they appear to be from the pacific northwest also.

Hmmm...I'm I know what your saying but I've never seen (69-71) a duplicate VON.I'm sure I have got some different model cars sold at the same dealership with consecutive VON's.

Exactly, you can not compare VON numbers across model lines. Some cars had the same VON, but if you see the same VON on the same type & model year car them one of them is a fake or a typo.

Here are two examples of 1970 Hamtramck cars with the same last six of the VON, one AAR Cuda & one Duster.

The Challenger.
When you think about it ..there are over 1 million VON's available per year...999,999 numeric and then the alpha numeric....no need to duplicate.

Chrysler Canada's order forms must have been different format than the ones used in the US. Do you have copies of any?

tallzag,

You said:
"I believe that the regional office gave out the order pads to the dealers so if cars are from the same region they should have close VON's."

Dealers typically received their vehicle order forms from their sales reps and or from the regional/zone office.

The initial stock orders were taken at the dealer only new model shows held generally at the largest city in the region/zone. There were dealer only new car shows all over the country and they took place within the same week, one for each region/zone. When I was selling Dodges new from 1968-1974 you would sit down per your turn with your sales rep to place your orders for your first orders that would show up at the dealership DAYS before the unveiling of the new models at the dealership.

The dealership I workerd for was in northern Illinois about 150 miles from Chicago. The dealer new car show was held in Chicago. Mr. Norm's was in the same region/zone. Guess who ordered the most cars at the show?

This being said your first orders would be in numeric order for the specific models you ordered that day. There were different forms for different models. When you left the table you would leave with additional order forms to order more cars that would arrive after your initial ordered cars at the dealer show. These forms would be used for additional stock and for customer special orders after the new dealer showing. The dealers before and behind you that sat down to the table would have consecutive numbers to yours based on the different orders they made for the specific models.

When the dealer would run low on order forms if the sales rep was scheduled to be at the dealership they always had order forms. If you could not wait then you ordered them from the region/zone office. Of course these forms came from a printing company to the Corporate Office and they were disperst from there to both sales reps and mailed the region/zone offices all over the country and from there to the individual dealers.

You can see from info above that ther will be SOME grouping of consecutive numbers from the same dealers, same region/zone and then they could bounce anywhere in the country.
