I have a Dana 60 housing in my racecar that has the dreaded worn housing where the driver side carrier bearing sets.

Is this something that can be repaired fairly easy or is it better off just to replace the whole housing? This would be major for me since this is a narrowed 4 link housing with brackets on it.....

I see you can get an axle bore facing tool to correct this? Anyone ever do this type of repair?

Where can you buy a tool?

Mine was doing the same thing and a few guys here told me to take a .002 off of the caps so they clamp the bearing cup better I never did it and just bolted on a support cover

So you are saying the bearing race will spin when you tighten down the cap bolts ? It does not look like it has spun in there ?

Unless I misunderstood the explanation I was told the bearing caps are bouncing causing the shiny spots like "cap walk" on main bearing surfaces. Now I cant see why trimming the caps would stop this from happening but I would think a new set of Strange caps would be the correct repair.

OK I can see a little cap walk there..I not sure I would worry about it. he got studs in there. and not sure there is much more you can do about it. excerpt like you say buy some big buck caps..and that may not stop it..

i beleive he stated the bearing race is loose not the cap. he could have a little taken off the caps as mentioned & that would increase the clamping force. i have done this at work. solved the problem. seeya.

Dana makes a tool that centers a shaft with a cutter through the caps it cuts the sides of the housing back square again. You need to shim the bearings out more once its cut. You can also do it with a sanding disk in a air angle clean up tool. I think A&D in jackson nj has the right tool.

That is a common problem.

I charge $50 to machine the face of the carrier bores, but shipping would be prohibitive.

The housing tool is fairly common now, so I wouldn't be surprised if a local shop has one.

In addition, kiss the carrier caps to create a 0.001" interference fit with the bearing races.

If you look you can see the groove where the outside of the race has worn the housing.

Here is a pic of the other side. This is how the driver side is supposed to look.

I don't know if the race spins, or the deflection from the bearing load beats up the case.

I suspect, this all starts when the carrier bearing preload is insufficient.

Man Dr. I wish you were closer to me I would give you this mess so you could fix it right. You say the tools are fairly common? Where did you get your tool? You don't happen to know where I can get one do you?

A machine shop in the Lewiston/Clarkston (ID/WA) area makes the tool, not Dana/Spicer.

I bought mine directly from the source years ago. I think Randy's Ring and Pinion distributes it now.

The tool is not exactly cheap, though.

Thats what I was afraid of.

If it gets too expensive I might be better off to get a new Stange housing and 4 link brackets and build a new one.

I would check around first. A well equipped 4 x 4 or drivetrain shop should have the tool.
