How much is to be gained by removing the choke tower on my 830cfm race series double pumper?
It's on a 452ci. street/strip big block that I shift at 6500. I'm currently fabbing a cold air induction system, and wonder if I should make this mod to my carb. Hood clearance mandates a drop base and 3" element, so the choke tower is fairly close to the top of the air cleaner. I have a cutting wheel and die grinder, so I think I could pull it off, but I've never done this.
Thoughts?....

use hachsaw to cut it , take your time cutting it strait ,
take the main body off and put it on a vise
two cuts next to the vents going down
and two cuts across to cut the airhorn off
use wd40 when cutting
with the diegrinder clean up the cutting you did
its worth 25-30cfm
1.39 9.85 - 137 mph

on a 830 going to 1 3/4" throttle plates and a contoured body would help cfm a little. holley rates a 1 9/16" venturi contoured body with 1 3/4" throttle plates at 1000cfm. thats probably a "happy" number. real world may be 900cfm. if you whack the existing body do what the brown charger guy did and add the big throttle plates.

just spend a few bucks and pick up a proform mainbody
After gutting my carb also like others have, I didnt want to chop up my new 800 cfm Holly.
I bought the $99.00 Proform carb body, witch is a much better design on all 4 barrels. Still the gain wasnt all that much.
Either keep the gutted choke tower or buy the ProForm body. Dont ruin the choke tower carb, its not worth the effort, IMO mike

I don't think Proform makes a main body for my carb. 830's have 1-11/16" throttle plate bores with 1-9/16 venturis. I called proform, and the main body that they have to go with the 1-11/16 plate bores is a 750 body, and actually has smaller venturi bores than my 830 does.
Anyway, I went ahead and took the tower off. Easier and quicker than I thought. About 2 hours and the carb was back together and on the car. I normally wouldn't have done this, but with a drop-base air cleaner, the tower really creates an issue.
My hope is that with the cold-air system, and this small mod, I can put myself in a position to claim an 11-second timeslip.
